Well we started off with a decent AMPS. He had 2.5u prior to his leaving for his dental.

I thought it was an early morning dental since he had to be there early. I just called and he was just going back to be done. I am anxiously waiting for the call to see how things went.

Well I finally called again. No extractions needed which surprised me, but I know vet will be able to tell me everything. I just spoke with tech. Once he wakes up they will let me know when I can get him. I'm interested to hear how the bad tooth was and how things look.
Do any of you clean your kitties teeth on a regular basis. Does it help. This is his 2nd dental in 15 months. Trying to avoid another one in near future

Yay for no extractions!!!!! Skooter just had his first dental ever on 04-01 (he is almost 18)....he had 6 toofers taken and part 2 for 4 more toofers is scheduled for 05-05. Hopefully Milo will be done with dentals for awhile now!

Happy to hear there were no extraction. I thought they said he would have to have an extraction. I am interested to know what the vet says.

They gave Milo a pain med in anticipation of extraction. He had dental 5 hours ago and still hasn't woken up.
All his vitals are fine. Heart, breathing etc. He just won't wake up. The vet call ed anesthesiologist and he ssid with this med they have seen a few cases where it takes time to wake up. We took insulin out, held and talked to Milo.
Has anyone heard of this. I don't remember the name of the med they gave him. Vet calling at 9 to update me. He lives next to clinic and is taking Milo hone tonight. I'm in tears with guilt.

oh, sending you big hugs! I haven't heard of it but as long as his vitals are fine, I'd stay hopeful and think he's just taking longer than usual.

No guilt - you're doing the best you can for him. Please let us know updates when you can. :bighug:

sending many vines to dear sweet milo.......

I am sure he just didn't hear them when they were trying to wake him up.....of course he is a cat, so he has to do everything on his own time :)

Keep us posted!

Oh no - sending lots of "wake up" vines for Milo. Don't feel guilty - this isn't anything you did or didn't do. Let us know when you hear an update. :bighug:

Oh Meredith, My heart and prayers go out to you and Milo. Sending loads of Alert vibes for Milo. I haven't hear of this specifically with cats, but I have heard of it with people, so hopefully it just takes him a little longer to wake up the normal. Since all his other vitals are good I wouldn't worry too much, but I know that is nearly impossible. Know that we are all here with you and ending our prayers to you. Big Hugs Sweetie.

And you should not feel guilty at all. I am certain that whatever has caused this to happen has nothing to do with how you have been treating Milo. You have been amazing and a real trooper.

Definitely keep us updated.

Sending love and prayers for Milo. Encouraging signs: his vital signs are good, the anesthesiologist said that there are a few of these cases where kitty is slow to wake up, and the vet is taking him home so he will be closely monitored tonight. You are both in my thoughts, please keep us posted.
Hugs:bighug::bighug:

Oh dear. :( this was not the update I wanted to read. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Milo. Hope he wakes up real soon!
:bighug:

Adding more prayers and vines for Milo!!

Sometimes it just takes longer to process the anesthesia. I had a cat that would take 3-4 days to fully get it out of his system.

Please update when you can! All of us are watching over you and your dear Milo!

First thank you for all the kind words and prayers.

My vet just called. Milo is still out, but is responding to touch stimulation more than before. He also had a bowel movement. The vet took both those as positives. He is monitoring glucose closely. Milo was at 650. He started slowly giving micro doses of insulin T. His oxygen heart rate are good.

Now that I am cried out I could think clearer. He was given buprenorphine for pain prior to anesthesia and dental in anticipation of extraction.

Anyone have any info on that drug or experience

Thanks again.
Vet calling again in 1.5 hours
Will update then

punkin had Bupe twice a day for months - maybe even a year. I don't think that entirely explains what happened, although he never got it BEFORE a procedure, only afterwards.

Good to hear he's starting to have some response. Continuing to send healing white light to your little sweetheart.

Lots of us use it for pain from pancreatitis and dentals.
Max has had it many times and came home with it after his dental. Do you know what was used for anesthesia? You said your vet contacted an anesthesiologist so that is good.

When he calls again I will ask what anesthesia was used. He has the cell number of anesthesiologist in case he needs to contact him again.

By the way, Metacam has a black box warning on it for causing kidney failure in cats. It is only approved for use for one time dose following surgery, so it's possible they may suggest it for Milo. Most people don't want to use it. It's used a lot more in other countries, and the suggestion from those countries is that the vets in the US give too large of doses. There are few good painkillers for cats. My acupuncture vet gave it to his own cat, but i didn't risk it for punkin.

there was a cat on FDMB, Latte, who died from it. Carolyn/Latte used to do regular educational posts about it.

Neko has been on buprenorphone twice a day for over a year, for her arthritis pain. There are usually pre-anesthesia drugs (pain meds and tranquilizers/sedation) and an anesthesia induction drug. Neko had ketamine and midazolam pre-anesthesia and alfaxolone for induction. She also had her regular dose of bupe that morning before her dental.

Well I got another update. His glucose was in 300s. Vet stopped giving insulin r since he had a dose of levemir at 6pm. That was a half dose.
Milo is responding more to facial touches. The vet also put Milo so he is sleeping on chest like they might normally do rather than side. He lifted Milo's head up, he held it upright on his own then put it back down. He did this twice to Milo.
Milo has watched NCIS and the news. He is at my vets house next to the clinic for the night. Vet is watching and monitoring hourly.

I forgot to ask about anesthesia name I have a bad headache and med I took makes me tired.

Thanks again for all the support and kind words. It has and brings t3aescti my eyes knowing that you are all there praying for my baby.

When my cat Sheba was given Bupe for pain, it completely knocked her out and she was unresponsive for about 8 hours. Couldn't eat or drink or take herself to the toilet. I didn't realise it was the bupe causing the unresponsiveness and I thought she was very ill. I repeated the dose of Bupe the next day and it was only after that , that I realised what was happening. After about 8 hours, she just suddenly woke up and started eating and acting normally again. I was so relieved, I can tell you!
Hopefully Milo will come out of it soon. You vet sounds very good and caring.

Positive thoughts, prayers, and big hugs coming your way...

{{{Meredith}}}

Lots more vine and prayers are headed Milo's way. It sounds like you have a wonderful vet, so I think he is in good hands. We will all be watching for your update in the morning. I hope you are able to get some sleep tonight. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Just checking in to see how Milo is doing. I am getting anxious about leaving for camp and couldn't get back to sleep. The first thing I thought of was Milo. It is good to hear that he is getting more and more responsive. I look forward to a positive update later this morning.

Sending more hugs and prayers.

Awesome vet :) sounds like Milo is getting the best care. Reactions to bupe vary hugely between cats so I'm guessing that is what's up with Milo. Sending many vines to Milo and hugs for you I can imagine how lost you are without him at home :bighug::bighug::bighug:
