When Milo was first on insulin he was eating Wellness and putting down nearly 2 cans a day which was way too much even for a 16lb cat. He has been off insulin since January and now only eats Fancy Feast classics. I don't know his optimal weight...when he was 23lbs the vet wanted him at 16lb. Now he is at 16 because of the diabetes but he should probably be even less.
My issue is that I can't even get him to eat 2 cans of Fancy Feast a day. He usually eats the Chicken and the Grill Feast which are 91 calories a can, so 182...which isn't nearly enough. I don't have set feeding times but even after 10 hours of no food he only took a few bites then walked away. I tried some parmesan which only made him eat a couple more. I tried putting freeze dried treats in, he just fishes them out.
I am trying other kinds, he sometimes likes the Seafood and the Salmon. Some days he scarfs them down but others he only takes a few bites. Today I tried crushing the Temptation treats and putting them on his food. Although he hasn't quite hit 2 cans yet today I feel like it is helping. But I worry about his perfect numbers going up because of those treats. I tested him twice today, I got a 90 and a 76 but if EVERY meal has them? I am worried.
Another thought I had was to pick up some Evo dry food and maybe give him like an eighth of a cup a day. If I remember right a cup has 612 calories. That's a nice 76 calories of help. BUT will that send his numbers up? I am afraid to try it and have it blow up in my face. I know dry food = the DEVIL but I am desperate.
He just had a dental about 2 weeks ago and the sheet said 16.8lbs but that is the same as the visit a month prior so I think they didn't change it which they have done before. I just weighed him a minute ago and he was 15.15lbs. I won't go to sleep until he finishes this can but that still isn't enough. I used 4 cans today between him and my other cat so he should be at around 181 calories. IF he ate half which I think my other cat ate a bit more than half.
I've been told here to go by the 13.6 x optimal body weight + 70 but I also read this on Dr Lisa's site "I have never seen a cat develop hepatic lipidosis when consuming at least 15 calories per pound per day. This number is figured on lean body weight, not fat weight. If your cat weighs 18 pounds but really should weigh 12 pounds, please make sure that he is consuming ~180 calories per day. (12 pounds lean body mass X 15 calories/pound/day = ~180 calories/day)"
So lets say his optimal weight was 12 pounds, is he eating enough at 180 calories? I don't really understand the lean body mass thing. The other formula says if his optimal weight is 12lbs he needs 233 calories. Which is right? If it's the 233 then I definitely need to go pick up some Evo.
I hate to make this even longer but I have tried other low carb canned. Merrick, Evo, Nature's Variety, Wellness, Authority. These 5 are the ones he liked the most. I tried every other possible option that I could find here in Michigan. Other than those 5, he hated everything. Wouldn't even take more than one bite.
