Obviously, Mikey feels the need to live up to his nickname RB. Ugh! He's been refusing to eat anything but FF 3%, and we've established that he seems to need .1 units of Lantus and 8% food. The Friskies pate was perfect, until he refused to eat it. Brat. So today I went to Petco and spent forever picking out foods with about that percentage of carbs to try. When I saw his BG tonight, I decided that it was important that he eat something higher than the FF. I was about to open one of the new cans, when I decided that we have so much Friskies, that I may as well give it another shot. He ate it. I just know that if I didn't spend all that time and money on alternate foods, he never would have.

It seems like I should get a +1 tonight. Make sense?

Re: Mikey 12/3 AMPS 408, PMPS 211 +1 266 strip question

Will Arkray GlucoCard 01 strips work in my Relion micro meter?

Re: Mikey 12/3 AMPS 408, PMPS 211

Given that Mikey likes to play with the LL diving team, a +1 might be prudent.

What a brat on the fuds. At least he ate the 8% tonight. But momma, that was so last week. ~RB

Hey Mary.

Coming form an all dry food diet, Webster was refusing to eat wet food unless we forced him. Many folks on here recommended sprinkling Fortiflora on his food. I picked up a box from the vet (I believe that you can get it elsewhere for less) and it seemed like he couldn't resist. I used it on his for for about 3 days and he started eating it without the Fortiflora. Not sure if you tried it but for $20 it was money well spent to get him to eat.

There is of course the possibility that he was getting over an infection or illness and finally decided to eat on his own. Either way, it seemed to be worth a shot and may have done the trick.

Glad to hear that he's eating the Friskies. Hopefully it will last, if not, the Fortiflora might be worth trying.

Are you weighing his portions? How much are you giving him and at what intervals? Perhaps we can solve this problem together?

There are some Arkray strips that work in Relion meters, but I can't say about that exact one. I used Arkray strips in our Relion Confirm. I think Ella/Rusty and Ann/Tess might be two that know about the Arkray strips, although I'm not positive. If no one else responds, you could ask one of them.

Yay that he was eating the friskies! Mine really like it. go figure.

Yes, I use the Glucocard 01 strips in my Relion Confirm, so it will also work in the micro. Much cheaper through ADW. :-D I get the buy 4, get one package free deal.

We should definitely work on solving this together! Our cats are ganging up on us. Let's gang up on them! :-D

I don't weigh Mikey's food. The best I can figure, he needs one can of Friskies or 2 cans of FF per day to maintain his weight. Since he's been eating only FF the last few days, I've been giving him half a can at PS, and a quarter of a can at +2, then another quarter at +4 during the day and +3 at night. Why? I have no idea. It just seemed to be working. Tonight I gave him a quarter of a can of Friskies at PS and a quarter of a can of FF at +2. I'll decided what to give him at +3 when I see his BG. In other words, I have no idea what I'm doing, so I'm winging it! When Mikey dives, I don't worry about giving him extra food, since he is still a bit underweight.

The Fortiflora is a great idea. I honestly wonder if Mikey is addicted to FF turkey and giblets. He really does act like it's crack. He's never been so crazy for a food before.

I really hope we can get these two regulated soon. This is so hard.

Our Walmart here is filthy and disgusting. I hate doing there, so it will be great to order online. I'll probably still have to get the syringes there, but obviously I don't go through as many of those.

I think Elise also uses the Glucocard 01 strips for her Micro.

Mikey Mikey.....cousin Gracie says don't be so picky!!!

You can also get syringes through ADW, depending on what you use. And, right now they are having a sale - 10% off with coupon code ADWDEC10 ! Their service is great, too.

Have a great evening, guys!

Re: Mikey 12/3 AMPS 408, PMPS 211 +1 266 strip question

The formula suggested here (I believe from catinfo.org) that I used was:

Required calories per day = [13.6 X optimal lean body weight in pounds] + 70

Catinfo.org suggests that "Most male cats should fall into the 11 -13 pound range." I have no idea what they mean by "most"?

I used 12lbs for Webster (he was once 15lbs before DKA) and came up with 233 calories per day I believe.

Using the Nutritional Composition chart from catinfo.org http://www.catinfo.org/docs/FoodChartPublic9-22-12.pdf to figure calories per can I came up with somewhere around 7.32oz per day or about a can and 1/3 of the 5.5oz cans of Friskies special diet turkey and giblets. I recently upped it to 8 oz because he was constantly hungry and 8 was an even number to work with. Like Mikey, (special diet)Turkey and Giblets was one of the only ones out of 6 types that he would even touch.

Mikey will of course be different. Maybe someone can elaborate on what is meant by " ideal weight" and "most". I have no idea myself.

BTW, digital scales can be purchased for pretty cheap. I picked mine up on ebay long ago for like $8. If you buy locally you might get some funny looks if you purchase syringes and a digital scale at the same time. :o

I've been giving Webster 1oz at PS,+1,+2, and +3 in an effort to prevent an early crash as we have both been seeing. I'm not sure how this is working because his insulin dose has recently been lowered and his numbers are so high all day. I suppose I will find out in the next couple days when I up his dose back to .50u from .25u.

Unfortunately, from what I have experienced most Walmart's are pretty disgusting. Although I'm no germaphobe, I double wash after shopping there.

Hi Mary,
Yes, you can use the Arkray Glucocard 01 Sensor strips in the Relion Micro (the Relion Micro is the same meter as the Arkray Mini.). If you need a back-up meter, you might consider ADW's very reasonably priced Arkray Mini testing kit (or the Arkray Glucocard 01 kit; the Glucocard 01 is the same meter as the Relion Confirm). These 4 meters all use the same strips: the Glucocard 01 Sensor strips. (Arkray makes other meters that use different strips, so be sure you get the correct strips!)

Have a good evening,

Ella & Rusty

Do they have any syringes with half unit markings?

They do have Monojects with the half-unit markings. That's what I used with Trix, although I know others prefer different brands. I'm not sure what other syringes they have at ADW.

The problem with the Monojects has been that they have a hub at the top that holds insulin. When we first started using them, the needle came all the way through the hub into the syringe so it never drew the insulin in the hub. Then I noticed the needles were stopping in the hub and drawing insulin from the hub in addition to the insulin in the syringe. When I started measuring the doses with a micropipette, I found that because of this hub issue, the doses were varying by as much as 0.46u. So I started using Terumos which are now being discontinued.

Wendy uses BD UltraFine with half unit markings and ADW has suggested Ulticare U-100 Vet RX Veterinary insulin syringes with half unit markings that they have on their website. I have enough Terumos to last me quite a while so I'm not switching yet but those would be my two recommendations and I believe ADW as both.
