Mike and Bj

Member Since 2012
Hi, well it's been almost 6 months since we've stopped by since Bj went OTJ.

He's been doing great until today. Happy, healthy, energetic. But today - no appetite, got sick twice, pee'd on my bed. He's got no energy and just wants to sleep. He won't even budge.

He was about (289)around 4pm and (365) at about 6pm. I don't know if he got into the other cat's food or something but he's not feeling good.

Should I give him 24 hours and see what he's like then? I don't know what to do

Have not tested for ketones. Can't really smell his breath. Tried to get him to eat but he won't... that's not his style. I think I'm going to get him to the doctor in the early morning.

You might want to put the. 911 icon on the first post above. More eyes may be able to advise and he sounds pretty sick.

I'm guessing most advice at this point would be to get him to the doc. I can't really afford even a regular visit and I can't imagine how much an emergency call would cost. So I'm taking him tomorrow at 8am.

I guess I wanted to know if I should give him insulin or not. But I don't want to 911 this...

I guess I wanted to know if I should give him insulin or not.

If this is an all of a sudden thing, then I'd say "no" on the insulin, Mike. You haven't seen any of the "regular symptoms" leading up to today? One dose of Lantus with no depot is probably not going to be a huge benefit anyway, I wouldn't think.

Definitely a great idea to bring him in tomorrow. Wondering if it's a pancreatitis flare up...

I'm with Carl. I'd hold off on the insulin until you have a clearer picture of what's going on. And yup, it's a vetty visit with a blood panel and probably a cystocentesis and culture and sensitivity to rule out a UTI. If Bj is prone to pancreatitis flares, an fPLI may also need to be sent out.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

Well, I panicked and called the emergency vet number and she told me he would probably be okay til the morning. She seemed like a newb though and didn't seem to know sh*t about feline diabetes. My regular doc is out til friday. I'm going to see how he's doing in the morning and decide to rush him in or wait for my regular doc.

Forgot to say it's nice to see so many familiar faces. I'll drop in and say hi when my panic level and nerves are not skyrocketed. Hope you are all well.

-Mike

I've hunted your ss a couple times since you went otj to see how your numbers were but you didn't have any.
I just can't go without looking. I've monitored mine the whole time....

I've gotten lax. It's been about 3 weeks since the last test. Stupid I know. But every time I test he's like 79, always perfect numbers. Never had a single bad number. That's why I didn't bother recording them. I'm kicking myself for slipping on the testing but what can I do...

And although he's 15 years old you would think he's only 9. Super happy and I can tell he's feeling great. Even late last night he was chilling with me and he was dandy. No symptoms or any indications of illness. But today he didn't come see me since this morning and was strangely absent all day.

He finally went pee and I checked for ketones and it came back neg. Then I noticed that they expired in January. Then I set him in front of his food bowls and he barfed some yellow-ish juice.

If that yellowish juice smelled really off, then you need to go to the ER. If Bj is vomiting bile, something isn't right. Is there any chance he ate something he shouldn't have -- not HC stuff but string, a plant, etc?

Yellowish stuff can also be food. Bile has a really peculiar smell.

Sounds like it could be a bout of pancreatitis, I would have them test for it. He sounds like he has a really upset stomach.

 Sorry to hear BJ is not feeling well .. I hope the vetty visit get's it all figured out and get's him on the mend!

Thanks for the kind words and advice you guys.

Good news from the vet so far. Blood work is normal and no signs of pancreatitis etc. Everything looks good but she gave him a long acting antibiotic. Basically, she's going to call tomorrow to see how he's doing and we're going to go from there.

He ate twice today and went pee so that's also good. BG was 160 which is on the down slope so that's positive as well. I got him to purr a bit. He seems a little better but he still just wants to go to bed.

Good news! A little purr is nice - I hope the antibiotics help and he gets to feeling better soon. Hang tough, BJ! Strength and healing vines headed your way!

Well, he's feeling a lot better today. Eating well, moving around, etc. He's not 100% but definitely improved. BG is back to normal range 80's-90's which is also a relief.

Thanks for the vines, all!

YAY! Good news! I am so glad he's feeling better, and BG's are back to what they should be. What a relief it must be for you that things are back to being good. :-D

Heh, good to see you all too. Yeah I don't know where the time went honestly. I'll stop in more frequently and say yo. I've checked in a few times but the board is always so overwhelming as usual lol.
