I know this topic is regularly beat to death, but I am short on time...

The meter we had been using for Max has been discontinued. And I was ordering supplies from Hocks, which we all know isn't really Hocks anymore. So the time has come that I need to get a new meter.

Max is OTJ, and has been happily sitting in the 80s for over a year now without insulin. :-) I'm looking for something inexpensive, hopefully with strips that I can purchase in an actual store, not online (it's just not worth it to pay shipping for a single vial of strips). We don't go through enough strips to use up a vial anymore, and really, I probably only check him once every few months or unless he seems to be acting 'off'. I do not shop at Walmart, so please don't suggest a Relion meter. Is there another meter that is comparable? I was using a Maxima AST if that helps, so I'm more used to a meter that requires only an itty-bitty bit of blood, but I'm sure I can adjust if needed.

I switched to Maxima Infinity from Hocks, but still have to order plenty of supplies for Tiggy.

Accucheck Aviva is a good meter and available at many stores. My hubby uses this for himself -- he was teetering on pre-diabetic edge and had to test himself for a while.

I really dislike the Walgreen's TRUE-whatever. BAD meter.

the freestyle meters are really good. easy to handle, require one of the smallest blood samples, and the best thing for a person in your situation is that the strips are good well after their expiration date (i've used them as far out as a year or so and compared them to new strips and they were accurate)
 
Thank you all for the very helpful information! I will check into getting those meters and see what the strips run at the local RiteAid. We live in the middle of nowhere, so RiteAid is about it for getting strips close to home, tho I do work in a larger city and have more shopping options there. :mrgreen:
 
The Relion Ultima meter is a scaled down version of the Precision Xtra, both made by Abbott Labs. I am not sure who makes the Relion Confirm and Micros. I have used both the Ultima and Confirm and been very pleased with both. Also on the rare occasions that I have dealt with Relion's customer service, they were very responsive and sent out replacement meters almost immediately. My meters were never replaced because of a defect. Callie just has a bad habit of delibertly knocking things off of the counter whenever she thinks I am not giving her enough attention. Unfortunately, a couple of times, my glucose meter was what she decided to throw on the floor. The little brat... :twisted:
 
Be careful of the Rite Aid store brand. If it's really a True Track, you might want to avoid it. It has a reputation for not being reliable.
 
Thank you for that info about the RiteAid meter! Someone on another thread mentioned a Target brand meter, so I might check that one out if I decide to go with a store brand. I just checked Max last Friday, so I have some time to shop around, I just haven't had time to research, and it doesn't look like I will for a while yet.
 
I hear ya about the time. It took me ages to get to where I had the brain power and time to deal with it. Long enough for a Walmart to open up nearer to me than I thought there was one. :-D It's about 20 miles away, which is closer than any other pharmacy, so I guess I lucked out. I love living out in the middle of nowhere, but it has its disadvantages ...
 
I believe a lot of the off-name/store brand meters may be from larger companies that label for the store. If you do enough research, you may be able to track down the manufacturer. I found the Relion info in the product manual.
 
I use a Relion Micro. Since I live outside Orlando, there are plenty of Wal-Mart's around. I just bought a pack of 50 strips yesterday for $19.98. My mom works for mcKesson and would have gotten me a meter (not sure what kind, we didn't get too into it), but since i live 1000 miles awy, it wasn't worth it. I should ask my co-worker what she uses, as I know she shops at Walgreens. I really need to try to get her and her hubby to come here...
