I have the Bayer Contour which the strips are not cheap. I was looking at the Walgreens meter, the ReliOn meter and the reviews are some what shaky. Anyone with experience with the less expensive units can please give me some in sight!

Thank you!

I tested my Relion against my AccuCheck, Contour and Freestyle Lite meters. It was close enough for me to feel comfortable using it. There will always be a variance even when using the same meter.

I have two meters both the One Touch and the Relion mini, I've compared them both side-by-side and both were very close to each other. I love the Relion is takes very little blood, nice small size that makes it very easy to use. The One Touch is my back-up meter as at least for me it shuts off before I can get it to his ear a lot of times if it takes me too long to get the blood.

Thank you! This is helpful. But it seems that this meter is only on line, and with only 20 strips?

the Relion meters? they are Walmart's house brand so if you've got a wallyworld closeby, you can get them there. get the micro or the confirm as they take the smallest blood sample (same as freestyle meters), don't require coding, and are the newest versions

I used a Maxima AST with absolute confidence, and Max went OTJ with it. I checked it against a One Touch Ultra Mini once or twice and they were within the normal range of error from eachother. The OTU usually measured a little lower, I think, but like i said, they were close.

The Maxima AST is only found online, but the strips are only about $17 for 50, I think. You can order it at Hock's.

If you are referring to the Relion meters they should be available in any Wal-Mart store, that is where I got mine. I think the meter itself was somewhere between $9 to $12 and I get 50 strips for it for $20. The meter doesn't come with strips those I had to purchase seperately. While it may vary from state to state, at least here in Nebraska both meter and strips are in the aisle with the rest of the diabetic supplies. Some places you will need to ask at the pharmacy counter as they keep them back there.

But I think meter, 50 strips and lancets to get started ran me in the neighborhood of $35 including tax.

Hope that helps.

I have been using the Relion meters for several years and have been very pleased with them. Also a few times, I have had to contact their customers service department (mainly because Callie had knocked the meter off of the counter and broke it) and they were very good and replaced the meter promptly.

You can buy the meter at either Walmart or Sam's Club. The meter is about $9 and strips around $40 for a box of 100. When I had two diabetic cats, this helped immensely in keeping the costs down for testing them.

The Relion Ultima meter was also last years Consumer Reports best buy.

I originally used the ultima and it requires a larger amount of blood and sips very slowly. the 2 newer ones take a very small amount of blood and sips like zip

No one has said anything about the walgreens brand meter yet - any meter that has a name like True Track, True Result, True **** tends to be not very accurate. There is usually at least one posting a month around here from someone discovering the inaccuracy of those meters.

That being said, I use the Bayer Contour meter too, but could never afford the price of those strips from a local store. If you are good and patient, you can get the strips on ebay for around $15 per 50 shipped. You usually have to buy at least 100 to get them around that price. I just won two different auctions for 100 strips each for $31 and $32 respectively.

I bought a true trak way back when I had the original relion ultima and they were comparable in numbers for me. I believe I have it in wheezers ss

I am very happy with my OneTouch Mini Ultra. I used to use Alphatrak and until I ran out of the Alphatrak strips, I compared the two meters on a regular basis for accuracy. There was usually never more than a 10-point difference between the two; one time a 15 point differnce I believe. Therefore, I find the OneTouch Mini Ultra very accurate, and the strips are so much easier to obtain.

I've used both the Walmart ReliOn Ultima (the older Walmart meter) and the new ReliOn Micro. The Micro takes a very small blood sample (.3 vs. .6 for the Ultima) and works fine. There was recently a recall of many batches of strips for the Ultima, but that should be resolved by now. The Micro costs $9. and a box of 50 strips costs $20. Available at all Walmart stores in the diabetes-supplies aisle.

Relion, as others have said.

Maxima AST and Infinity, both of which have strips at reasonable prices on EBay. Also, if you want to buy a case of Maxima or Infinity strips directly from the manufacturer at a discount, I can give you contact info. PM me for it. A case is 24 boxes of $50, and last I checked you could get the strips from the manufacturer for $11 box when you buy the case.

But even with the manufacturer's discount, they are more expensive than EBay. I can get 200 strips from EBay for about $25.

The Infinity is the successor to the Maxima. The Maxima will be discontinued sometime this year, although replacements for faulty meters and strips will be available for some time to come.

I love the Relion Micro, I have the Confirm too, there was only l point difference when I tested on myself - they both use the same strips & are inexpensive.

We are soooo new to home-testing with Felix...we returned from Walgreens today with the TrueResult and seems to be reading accurately (?) We tested our civie, Jasper, though and he had an alarming BG of 52 !!! and we'd never even thought of testing him for FD!

I read that a lot of you have multiple meters..is that so you can test accuracy? or merely for back up? We liked the pricing of the True Result (free meter kit after rebate) and so far, in our very humble beginnings, the lancing is working.

I plan to retest Jasper in the a.m., as his appetite and attitude doesn't seem to be affected by the pokes. If the BG's come out screwy, I plan a trip to the vet tomorrow to get a baseline and to compare my meter against their AlphaTack.

Thoughts anyone? Thank you again for all your support!

just a quick note so you know. the number you got on Jasper is a normal non-diabetic number so that's nothing to worry about k :-) all my civies i test range from high 40's to mid 60's any time i test them. testing a non-diabetic kitty or yourself is always a good way to test the accuracy of your meter though.

Cindy- we've been juggling numbers all week with Felix...our vet has us working withing the "71-159" is normal range and anything below that is risky.

Would you mind throughing me a standard range that I can use for Jasper as a civie? It'll put my mind at ease so that I can stay focused on Felix and not go completely bonkers these first new weeks. thank you! thank you! (its been a verrry long week...as you all know & remember)
