When I first started testing, I foolishly got a OneTouch Ultra. Seems to work just great, but the test strips are over $100 for 100 strips - yikes! So I'm running low on test strips and decided to get the Relion Prime to save some money. Here's the thing....

I tested both meters on myself and the numbers were off by 12 - ok, fine
When I tested kitty for PMPS tonight, the numbers were off by about 100!! I tested 4 times, 2 with each meter:

Relion: 289
OneTouch: 398

Relion: 306
OneTouch: 404

I will keep getting 2 numbers until I run out of OneTouch test strips just to see what happens. Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this sort of thing? I like the Relion numbers better.... ;-)

Tested both meters at +4:

Relion:266
OneTouch: 326

I really don't get how these can be so different and I don't know if I should go with the Relion numbers or suck it up and pay more $$ to stick with a consistent tester. How can I know which one is the true number?

they are both good meters, but all meters have a variance, so stick with the Relion and use your onetouch as your backup meter.

You could test from the same drop of blood with 4 of the onetouch strips and you would get 4 different numbers.

Just stick with one meter because you are looking for the changes, increases or decreases, just so you know how the insulin is working.

Will do. Switching to Relion. I will do my best to show that in the spreadsheet. I guess that's one way to bring the numbers down!!

The other option is to bring both meters with you next time you go to the vet. You can compare the results on your meters with the vet's results. While these may both be good meters, 100 points is more than meter variance.

From the standpoint of safety, it's probably best to err on the side of knowing if numbers are low. However, there's also a risk if the numbers are really 100 points higher. I'd compare with your vet's readings to be sure.

I have been using a One Touch Ultra Mini since day one and have also got one as my backup (as well as a Contour). I love love love this meter. I never pay more than $25 for a bottle of 50 strips. I order them on ebay and I only order from top rated sellers, free shipping, and only if the strips are $25/bottle or less with expiration dates out at least four months. I've gotten some smoking deals.....I just got a smoking deal of 500 strips for $200, free shipping and they expire in 10/2013.

I have found it reads a little higher than my Contour at high numbers but almost the same in lower ones.
