Meter Recommendations?

I have been using Relion meter but Thompson's vet is insisting that I use a glucometer for cats (I don't think it is for $ reasons though as he is a mobile vet so we fill our rx's & buy supplies wherever we want) to monitor Thommys glucose from now on. Price-wise (initial meter cost + test strip refills, It has come down to deciding between these two meters:

I know the AlphaTrack 2 test Strips can be pretty costly but from my understanding, the Petsure! test strips are made to use with the AlphaTrack Glucometers and they cost a lot less.

*Update*
I've since read on the forum that others who have used the PS strips with the AT2 have had questionable results. So I am definitely taking info that into consideration for what my final choice will be.

After adding tax & S&H, both meters are about the same price, but the VQ Pet H comes with more test strips.


Does anyone use either of these meters & can you tell me about your experience with them?

Or what meter do you use?

I use ReliOn. I’d ask your vet why he’s insisting on that. Can he not interpret human numbers? Pet meters didn’t exist till recently so I find it a red flag for any vets who ask me to use a pet meter. My two cents.

I moved this post to Feline Health, where you are more likely to get answers. The Tech forum is more for technical issues with using FDMB or the spreadsheets.

I'd stick with the human meter. The strips are (a) so much cheaper (b) easier to get in the middle of the night when you are close to running out and (c) what our dosing methods are based on. And until a few years ago, it's all everyone used, until the company that makes AT started their marketing program.

I use a Centri Vet calibrated for cats (I am UK based) but it is a Canadian or USA company I think. Changed a couple of weeks ago from an Alphatrak and I am pleased with the change because the readings do not fluctuate as much. I don't know why but they do sample a larger drop of blood (which in turn can be a negative if you have trouble getting blood). It costs me less than half the price of running the Alphatrak here in the UK.
