they are not the same and do not work the same.

Miralax works by drawing water into the intestines...thus the need to provide
extra water with canned food (or Sub-Q fluids, if you are already doing that for
other reasons).

Metamucil adds fiber, and thus bulk to the stool....not always what you want.

Very helpful information.. thank you!!
Unfortunately I did give a little of the Metamucil before seeing the replies - it caused one of my girls to vomit last night & this morning. I will not be giving that again, especially after her getting sick & reading your replies.
I am going to buy the Miralax - do you know if that causes vomiting?

My cat has never vomited from miralax.

It gets sprinkled onto the food and dissolves. I would start in the range of 1/8- 1/4 teaspoon and wait a few days before changing the dose. Add water to the food also, because it will draw/hold water into the bowel as it is moving its way through the intestines. It takes several days before you will notice any change in the consistency of whats coming out the back end.

If they are severely constipated now, it will not help relieve that issue, it will only affect what you added it to. If they are severely obstructed you may need a vets help.

They each go about once a day - we have never had issues. Yesterday Baby had a piece that did not fall right out (sorry for the graphic picture) so it kind of freaked me out & someone suggested she might be constipated - so I ran to the store. Since their diet change - their stools are definitely harder & small.
Helpful to know that the Miralax might take few days.. because I am the type that would be sprinkling it at every meal if I did not see action LOL

If they are going everyday, you are probably fine and I wouldn't be overly concerned. My cat has megacolon and without a lot of help would not go for many days. Sounds like a bit of water added to the food every meal could help things out.

Miralax is not going to stimulate poo. It just keeps it softer so that it passes easier, but this requires extra water added so they don't get dehydrated. It DRAWS water into the colon. Based on what you said, I would lean toward the smaller dose of 1/8t or else you may have a different problem......

For years we battled it with a progression of pumpkin, extra water, tummy massage, vaseline at both ends, mineral oil, lactulose, cisapride, sub Q lactated ringers soln, B12 methylcobalamin, vet soap enemas, home water enemas, and finally miralax.

Of all that we we finally came to a combination that works and I feel is safe:

>1/2 t of miralax in 11 ounces of canned DM with 1/2 cup of water (120 ml) , sub divided into 4-6 meals over 24 hours.
~125 ml of lactated ringers every day
-close watching/palpating his tummy and warm water enemas whenever I start to feel bananas in his abdomen.

Miralax, lactated ringers and home enemas has been the long sought answer. Its been more of a problem then his uncontrolled diabetes, which I now know was due to acromegaly. thanks to the FDMB (for the miralax and acro dx) :-D
