I am actually asking this question for a friend of mine. Her vet just put her cat, Baxter, on meta cam and glucosamine for arthritis. I told het that meta cam was not good for cats but I couldn't give her the reason why so that she could take the info to her vet. I just know it can cause renal failure in cats but I don't really know anything more than that and that wouldn't convince a vet!!

So I am requesting some information on meta cam & possibly some suggestions on a different pain killer for Baxter. Please and thank you!!,

Metacam is hard on both the liver and kidneys in cats.

Glucosamine is good for arthritis, as is fish oil (anti-inflammatory). Depending on where you live, Cartrophen shots also help (Adequan in the US). Those all help the arthritis itself. For pain relief, other medicines are buprenorphine (whick Neko is on) or gabapentin. Acupuncture also provides some relief.

And for arthritis - you want to use glucosamine, chrondroitin and MSM combo! This can be in pill form (and mixed into wet food) or treat form. The one I use is from vitacost and is bacon flavored - my cat loves it. I break one wafer into four pieces and she eats it once a day. http://www.vitacost.com/vitacost-tag-arthropower-tm-for-pets-with-glucosamine-chondroitin-msm/?cas=1

And yes it does have sugar in, so as long as the cat isn't diabetic, should be good to give.

And stay away from the metacam -- Dyana provided the links on that.

Thanks everyone - I knew you would all come through for me - I just knew that it was not good but now I can provide proof - you are all the best in providing information that will help save cats!!

Thank you thank you thank you!!
