So last night, I took Merlin to the vet along with his food, sleeping pad and blankets that he likes to sleep on. They were so accommodating and gave him a nice big kennel. He was the only patient staying over night so it should have been fairly quiet for him. There was no monitoring but they do stay there pretty late. I took my spreadsheet and explained to the vet tech yesterday's event and that i didn't shoot last night. I live about 10 minutes from the vet and once I got home, I got a phone call asking if I can bring the insulin back to the office. The doctor wanted to give him insulin last night. I dropped it off but everyone was busy so I couldn't find out how much they are going to give him. I also dropped off two U100 syringes and my conversion table. They said that I could call at 8:30am to see how the night went and how he is doing this morning. Seems weird without Merlin in the house...

I slept in today...that was nice. Anyway, I called at 8:30am and the vet tech said that he is up and alert and talking to everyone. He said that he is very active. I could hear him in the background. I asked him about the fluids and that all went well. He told me that he would call me before noon to give me an update of the surgery.

VT called at 11:30am and said everything went well. Merlin was under for 28 minutes. They pulled the one canine (the one that was broken) and a middle molar. He said that there was a lot of tartar that could have obstructed some of his bite and possibly rubbed the inside of his mouth. The molar that was taken out had a hole going through it and he thought that could have been pretty painful. I told him about the crunching noise that Merlin sometimes makes and he right away said that was because of the pain. I am so glad we were finally able to get this done. I forgot to ask about the growth on his right leg but hopefully that is gone. I meet with the vet at 4pm and to pick up Merlin.

I will update if there is more later on.

YAY!!!!

I'm so happy and relieved to hear that Merlin made it through the fluids overnight and the dental this morning without issue. I'm glad you got to hear him "talking" in the background this morning. I'm excited to see what happens to his insulin needs after he fully recovers from the dental surgery. Give Merlin a big old hug from me and Eddie when you get him home! :-D

Yeah way to go Merlin glad everything went great...Awesome sending more beautiful healing green light for a quick full recovery :YMSIGH: cat(2)_steam ;-) Glad that one is behind you now to get you to the Falls lets see you and Trey stay in the blue lagoon for a day or so anyway.....Hugsssssss Angels will keep you on that road too!!!!

God news, Cindi. You'd think that the infection and pain would definitely have impacted his numbers upward. Hope he feels well soon. (be sure they send you home with some pain meds.)

Wahoooo!!!!! So glad to hear it all went awesome! His insulin needs may be different now...can't wait to see. Yay Merlin! Feel better soon buddy!

Thanks to all for all those good vibes. Well Merlin is home. I spent 1.15 hours at the vet. I really like my vet and vet techs. He ended up giving Merlin .4u last night; the same that I gave him about 9 hours prior. He asked how did I measure .4? So I showed him the U100 but he wasn't sure about that especially with the U40 insulin. I went over the conversion table and somewhere he remembers in his studies that his teachers discouraged it. I tried to explain it the best I could so finally he asked if I could wait while he calls a pharmacist friend to see what he thinks. The pharmacist concurred what it was and that all was ok. The pharmacist even said that there is a conversion table out there from a feline diabetes forum. I said YES I am involved in that. What was cool was that the vet said that he now loves my spreadsheet and would like it weekly or whenever I can drop it off. He can't believe that Merlin doesn't have to take very much insulin and was so excited about him getting into the 100's. Another cool compliment was that he thought I missed my calling in the vet field.

So now and for the next couple of days, Merlin is probably going to have periodic nose bleeds from his canine extraction. They all said that he really should start to feel a whole lot better say in about a couple of weeks, once he has healed. He shouldn't have the crunching that he was doing due to no pain. With all the fluids that he received, he seemed to feel better - coat wise. So with that, he showed me how to give subq fluids. They gave me a bunch of needles, the line and fluids. So I am going to start giving him 75mls per day or when I can. He first said 150 mls every other day or M, W & F but Marje suggested to do it daily and he was ok with that. Oh I really didn't want to get into the subq fluid thing but both the vet and Marje said that Merlin is in the early stages of CKD (I thought he was in the late stages) so ..... anything to make it him comfortable and slow down the illness.

I could tell that Merlin's vet has been doing some homework. He has been checking out some other alternatives that he suggested to me. He gave me the names of the supplement so I can do my research. He said that he has already talked to some other vets regarding some of these alternatives and he has received mixed reviews. Regardless, glad that he is giving me some of that information so I can make my own decision on whether to pursue or not.

I am so glad this is all over and now I know that there are not any barriers or unknowns that are in his way of getting him regulated.

Thanks again for all your support too. Merlin could not have made it this far, this well, without you all.

I kept a civvie, Kiddle, going for over 5 years with CRF. She was 18 when it became time to let her go.

Tanya's Feline CRF site is terrific, if you haven't been there to read up on it yet.
