Merlin is sick - better now but hasn't pooped yet

This is the first time since I've had him that he won't eat. He's had liquipoo (bad) for about 2 days. He ate cat food Friday morning. Friday evening he wouldn't, but he did eat a good amount of deli turkey. I did the thing where you put out about 4-5 kinds in desperation. Nothing. He may have been full from the turkey. He's a very good eater usually. I called the vet and got some metronidazole this morning. I also bought FortiFlora. He ate a little bit of cat food with the FF on it.

I think this happened because he was no longer wanting to eat his Wellness food. He loves food but not the Wellness and this is the only food I've ever found that he has totally normal poop on. I gave him two cans of Soulistic with gravy and he got very sick. He can eat Soulistic but not the gravy kind. He's had poop all over him for the last couple days. I've had to bathe him several times. It's been very upsetting for both of us. I'm hoping once he gets over the hump and starts eating that he will like the new Wellness chunk foods. I'm desperate. He's got a vet appointment Monday evening.

Any thoughts? Should I have him tested for IBD or am I over-reacting?

I can't remember now if it was Tom or Tiger who once had a case of the liqui-poo's, but I do remember how sick he/she appeared. I confinded him/her to the bathroom as the liqui-poo's were not making it all the way to the box.
I could'nt sleep knowing he/she were in there alone so I brought my pillow and blankie and spent the night laying on the floor by his/her side. Every so often cleaning a butt with a wet cool cloth.
Can't remember how long this went on, and of course I was not dealing with a diabetic.
I think the reason I'm writting is if the diarhea is becoming an out of box problem you could consider confining him. Of course you should spend the day in the bath room with him ;-)
To go or not to go to the vet I can't say....what I can say is you must keep him hydrated. syringe water feed him.
liqui-poo drains the body of water.

Traci i'm so sorry you are having these problems. I know he must feel so bad and
i know this is so exhausting to deal with.
Wish i could help; but i will say a prayer for your sweet boy.

Thanks ladies for your support. Having a sick fur-kid is the WORST!

He seems alert and he just jumped up to the window with the screen to watch birds and butterflies so he may be feeling better? I'm afraid to try to feed him for fear he'll reject it and I'll be upset. He's had a dose and a half of his stomach meds, a tiny bit of cat food with fortiflora on it, and a slice of turkey. He's also eaten a couple chicken treats. No poop since the AM. Seeing him with liquipoo all over his bum is so sad, not to mention very disgusting and dirty. I hate upsetting him by cleaning him but I must do it....the poor guy. I hope this med gets his diarrhea over with soon. I'm guessing it must burn and give him cramps. UGH.

ahhhh, traci...the boomer will get better. too bad he does'nt enjoy the butt wipe. tom loves to have his butt wiped :lol:
sometimes, just for a treat when it's hot and i wet him down with a cold damp clothe, i'll get it extra wet on one corner and wipe his butt for him which makes his act really strange.
he immediately rolls over on his back, purrs up a storm and gets totally docile. I wonder if he is having a male gay sexual thrill out of the butt wipe.....does that make me a kitty molester? he does enjoy it to pieces... :lol:
 
The latest is that he has started doing better after giving him the kitty poop meds. Thank GOD. He's still being a little picky, he's not back to normal yet. He has been playing, purring, grooming and peeing but no poop in about 24 hours. This med must have stopped him up.

The price of this medicine (Metronidazole) was $20 for about a quarter cup. It's TOTAL robbery....but I'm glad it's working. I checked on 1800 Pet Meds and they don't sell the liquid; I was going to compare prices.

He's going to the vet tomorrow night.
 
Hope he poops soon.

Sometimes when there has been a clean-out of the bowel (diarrhea does that), it takes a
while for the 'pipeline' to refill and begin producing again.

Hope its the proper poop when he does !

Yup you're probably right.

BTW-the company I work for (Hancock Natural Reseouce Group) either has or used to have a satellite office (Hancock Forest Management) in Enumclaw. I was there years ago while visiting White River forest I think. Cant remember because it's been so long.

Wow....there's a company called White River Mill here. No White River Forest that I know of,
but we do have a White River.

Gabby's been through a couple of bouts of liquipoo. It's no fun! I'm glad to hear that Merlin is doing better, though. Is Merlin relatively easy to pill? The metronidazole (Flagyl) is available in pill form and probably costs a whole lot less.

It's nice to see you somewhere other than LL. :lol:

Believe it or not I've never given Merlin a pill, only liquids, so I'm not sure. He's a little dramatic and wide-eyed for the flagyl. I did taste a tiny drop and it was pretty strong. He may eat a pill in a pill pocket though.

Over the weekend my BF brought his doggie clippers over and we shaved his butt and back leg fur down fur down so if he has liquipoo it hopefully won't get all over him like it did before. Eeeeeewww.

I'm considering getting him a girl kitten - possibly a torti meezer mix. I've never had a torti. Any thoughts?
 
Only suggestion - Maybe wait until Merlin is healthy before bringing in another cat.

Personally, I love torties, tortitude and all. They aren't always full of tortitude, so you might find a real love of a tortie when you visit a rescue or shelter.

Oh, yeah. He's my top priority and he's visiting the vet tonight. Hopefully he'll poop today. I've lowered the amount of Flagyl a bit just in case he's getting constipated. No new kitties until he's back to normal. I do think he'll be happier with a friend. I was thinking a tortie simply because he needs a strong kitty who won't any crap from him!
 
Dottie is a Tortie, but she is really easy going. Jeter and Tilly push her around, lol. She won't challenge them when they take her food or treats. Jeter has poo issues, too and I've been trying to get him to eat Wellness No Grain wet, he doesn't really like it. I have to put Liva-Little dust on it to get him interested in it . I have left Wellness food out before leaving for work and it is gone most of the time when I get home, so I guess he will eat it without the dusting. Dottie and Tilly aren't happy with the Wellness Food, either. I'm still giving them FF, but of course Jeter ends up eating some of that! Cleaning runny poo off the sides of the litter box is getting annoying :roll: ! I hope the Wellness food works once I get him to just eat that.
