Mercury Levels in Fish -Am. Heart Association

Found this interesting listing on the Am. Heart Association's site for mercury levels in fish. Herring is very low, I'm glad to see. I have been worrying about the amount in the Wellness Chicken and Herring I feed Shadow and now I won't be as afraid to feed it to him most of the week. Should I still be concerned in your opinion? I can't find any documentation where a cat has had mercury poisoning from eating canned cat food with herring often.... hmmmm...
 
as I stated earlier, there are a few general concerns with feeding fish

1. mercury and other heavy metals - really only matters wtih larger fish like tuna. and no I've never heard of cats dying from mercury poisoning, but it is something to consider (the metals, that is)
2. phosphorous - not good for cats with renal issues
3. is not considered a species appropriate protein
4. can be an allergen (forgot this in my earlier post)
 
I certainly would not feed a cat only one source of protein be it chicken or fish. The term "species inappropriate" is used by Dr. Lisa so I assume her web site explains why fish would be an inappropriate protein source for cats. I have seen feral cats catch fish out of ponds and eat them. I would be interested in finding out what the rationale is for considering fish inappropriate for cats.
 
I definitely will not be feeding the Wellness Chicken and Fish or any other fish based canned cat food on a regular basis after all the great feedback here and more research. Hopefully I can persuade Shadow to eat non-fishy canned food. Thanks so much again. :)
 
I would just caution you a bit before you limit yourself to no fish and no bi-products. A. your cat may not agree and B. some fish and some bi-products may be just fine. However, if you can get away with not feeding either, then super :)
 
Thanks Jen, I'll def. keep that in mind (which is spinning) and prob. incorporate some 2 or 3 times a week as he can be picky.
