Meloxicam (Metacam®)---Possible ALERT---

I was at the vet's office this morning with WISP for her breast cancer. My vet received a letter/fax yesterday regarding this pain medication - a strong warning to not use on cats due to high risk of liver damage.

I may have the medication name wrong but would like someone to confirm if this is true: Have veterinarians been alerted this week via fax/letter from the manufacturer of Metacam notifing veterianrians of the high risk of liver damage for felines if used?

It is my understanding this medication is used quite frequently post surgery and some veterinarians have indeed seen cats have induced liver disease to this medication.

comments welcome--thank you

*I apologize if I do have the name of the medication wrong..if I do..what pain medication were veterinarians alerted to this wk regarding felines and liver damage?

I didn't know about liver damage only that it should be used with caution because of possible kidney damage.

However, in looking at the new guidelines in the above Sticky, it does mention using with caution in cats 'with' liver disease which would make sense (page 532 of the pdf):

Liver disease
Panel recommendations
. Due to the rare potential for NSAIDs to cause hepatotoxicity in other
species, routine biochemical monitoring, including liver enzymes, of cats
receiving long-term NSAID therapy is recommended.

. Dose-reduction (titration) should be considered in cats with pre-existing
liver disease. In the presence of severe liver dysfunction (eg, as evidenced
by moderate to severely elevated bile acids), and/or hypoalbuminaemia
(of any cause), NSAIDs should be used with extreme caution, if at all.

So I am not sure what this new alert means and maybe others with knowledge about it will chime in.

The main issues are around repeated use and cats with pre-existing liver conditions. We have our drooler on metacam and she was checked for liver issues prior to starting and will have retesting done. Squeak was on metacam briefly and had his liver values checked first. I do not in any way wish to diminish Carolynn's experience; but I trust my vet and there are times when she uses metacam.

Please see the discussion about NSAIDs, including Metacam, on the Think Tank forum here.
