Lydia & Sid & Jake(GA)

Hello again everyone!
I'm not sure how I feel about being back. I know none of you will remember me when I was on here with my beloved 19 year old cat named Jake who died July 16, 2010 after being diabetic for 8 years. He was a true champion and he is missed every single day. Well, I decided that 5 felines +2 FeLV+ (kept separate) were not enough and in May 2011, I adopted a new friend from Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah because I really missed having a senior cat in the house. His name at the sanctuary was Scrambler (and you can read all about him on their website) but I have changed his name to Sid. He is 15 years old and only weighs 6.5 pounds. He lived at the sanctuary for 9 years and was virtually unadoptable for "inappropriate urination." (Well, I have found at my house he never learned to squat and so he stands and sprays in the litter box - with a few modifications, we are having no problems with this issue.) He is really an awesome cat and used to living in a "colony" so he gets along great at my house.
For about the last month, I have observed Sid drinking what I realized rather slowly (duh!) was A LOT of water. I thought to myself, no way can he be diabetic because he is so small and already on a canned food diet. Well, I was wrong. His bloodwork yesterday came back with a glucose of 385. Along with the high glucose, he had lost 1/2 pound since July. In hindsight, I now realized that his ravenous hunger was probably a sign too and here I thought he just really liked the canned food I fed him.
He is now on 1.25 units of Lantus. After donating all of my glucometers, syringes, and various other supplies to FDMB after Jake died, I had to go back out last night and get all new stuff. So I picked up a brand new ReliOn glucometer and checked Sid tonight. His poke was very quick and easy - I was so happy (he is on the shy side and doesn't like to be handled). My vet is pretty confident we can get him into remission. Well, that remains to be seen (I will do my best).
I am back now and beginning another wonderful journey with a sugar cat.
