Hi all - my name is Ashley! Puma was diagnosed late April of 2018 when he was started on 2 units of Lantus. I went back and forth to the vet for blood testing and after a few months we ended up at 5 units which is where he has stayed. I went on vacation a couple weeks ago and left Puma with my parents for the week - on the 4th night they called in a panic because he was very dazed and his body was limp about 6 hours after his dose. I walked them through giving him a little syrup to lick and had them offer him some wet food - he ate it, came to and was back to normal after about 45 minutes. It seems he went hypoglycemic, although they swear they gave him his normal dosage.
I took him to the vet when I got home and they kept him all day for testing and said his readings were into the 400's so he shouldn't be going hypo. They told me to raise his dosage by .5 units as well which I have not done yet.
I just got a meter to start home testing today - it arrived exactly 6 hours after his dosage so I tested and his BG was at 109. I plan to continue testing before raising his dosage anymore - from what I have seen on this forum, 5 units is very high already. Puma is a pretty big cat at 19lbs. I attached a few pics.
I also started Puma on Zobaline a few months back because he started having a limp and was fully on his hocks after about 4 days from when the limp started - after only 1 week of 1 pill per day, he was back to normal. I was almost 2 months in on the vial of Lantus when this happened so I'm wondering if it had lost its effectiveness. Up until this point, I usually had no issue with using 1 vial for 2 months. I immediately switched to a new vial once I saw this decline in his walking so that likely helped with the bounce back as well. Now I do not use the same bottle for more than 6 weeks. I continue to give him Zobaline each morning because I figure it can't hurt.

I look forward to and appreciate all of the knowledge and support that this forum has to offer!

Hello and welcome. Sorry you had such a scary incident with Puma, but I'm glad to see you are testing now. And you've got the spreadsheet and signature set up, well done.:) Pop on over to the Health Forum for questions as you get started, and take a look at the Sticky Notes in the Lantus/Basaglar/Levemir forum. You'll note that if kept in the fridge, many people use their vials up to six months.

Thanks so much! I have always kept my vials in the fridge so not sure then... maybe I'm just being overly cautious. I'm glad to be testing now too - my vet really didn't suggest doing it on my own so I just lucked into seeing your forums about a week ago and thought I'd give it a go. I will take a look at the forums you suggested!
