Hi I just picked up Oscar from his foster home and he is a handsome Black & White boy who when last weighted was 16.9 lbs. A very big boy to say the least. The vet believes he is around 4 years old but we don't kow for sure. He is currently on 3 units of Canisilun twice a day. He is currently eating dry Purina DM and has only been tested twice at the vets the last time was in October and his numbers where around 18 (we are in Canada). Probably won't be able to test and shoot him this evening as we do not want to stress him out any more right now and tomorrow we will be attempting to do a curve to see where we stand and then switch him to Lantus and start the change to wet food. Not sure how he is going to handle the testing as the foster never tested before shooting (Scary stuff). Any suggestions on how much Lantus to start him on I was figuring 1 unit and go from there but would like some feedback.

Welcome!

Starting at 0.5 to 1.0 units is a generally safe level.

In addition to glucose blood testing, which it sounds like you will start tomorrow, you might pick up some urine ketone testing strips to keep an eye out for that.

My signature link of Secondary Monitoring Links has instructions for those if you need them, plus a list of some other ways to monitor his health.

Cat Info has good nutrition info if you haven't been there yet.

And my signature link of Vet Interview Topics will be helpful to review to see if your current vet is up to date or if you are interviewing for a new vet.

Never thought of the ketones as Boomer(our first Diabetic that passed away last month) never had any problems with ketones. I think we have a meter that tests for ketones would just need new strips.

Note: MedVet is specialty vet clinic, so are likely to be pricier.
That said, any other vet office who will refer to them for consults and emergencies knows his or her limitations and isn't afraid to refer out.

Oscar is one very lucky cat to have you adopt him. Bless you for doing that. Are you going to post a pic of him soon?

Don't feel you need to rush with removing the dry food. Get comfortable with hometesting first, and then phase out the dry when you feel able to monitor the effect of that on Oscars blood glucose.

Best wishes to you and your new Sugarcat,
