medications while giving cat Lantus

Before Spot was diagnosed, we gave him .5 of amitriptyline a day for his overgrooming himself habit, which helped. (It did make him drowsy.) Then when he got really sick he stopped chewing (lethargic). Now he's chewing himself again. Can I give him the amitriptyline even though he's on Lantus?

Here is Wiki's info in it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amitriptyline

He has been overgrooming himself on and off for many years. No, I can't afford behavior therapy or a test to see if it is allergies.

when our cat was first diagnosed with diabetes, our vet recommended 1 unit a day in the morning. Which was not correct. Am I supposed to trust her judgment now?

You talk to her about it, see if she is open to learning and working with you. If she is, then yes I would trust her judgement to an extent. Most vets are 'general' practitioners. They see many different species with a zillion different conditions. They cannot be experts in everything.

The key to a good vet, imho, is whether or they are willing to learn and work with you. And, they will acknowledge mistakes when they make them!

They also have access to veterinary websites and books with drug interactions, which most laypersons do not. ;-)
