? Meal times if switching Vetsulin to Lantus?

Some vets don't have a lot of feline diabetes knowledge, After all, this vet has you on Vetsulin which hasn't been recommended for cats for almost a decade.
 
I'm going to tactfully pass on some information to that vet clinic and probably another couple clinics.. The GoodRX coupon & some other valuable info links.

I think vets and vet techs would be most likely to read and digest short resources with highlights. What quality vet education references might you, or anyone else, suggest?

A good deed people on here could do if have time would be contact local vets and tactfully forward good info for the office reference & education. Even less experienced people could maybe do by passing along standard links or handouts. 👍 👍 That could be such a blessing to so many!! 💖💖💖💖💖

Many of us are in the same boat as you in terms of having a vet with little to no FD knowledge/training. They try to treat diabetes in cats like they treat dogs (hence the prescribing of Vetsulin (which is typically used in dogs) instead of the gold standard insulin for felines, Lantus or Prozinc). There are industry professional organizations that offer vets continuing education such as this organization which clearly mentions that Lantus and Prozinc are the preferred insulins for felines. You might share that with your vet. But from what I've observed, if you have a vet that doesn't know much about FD, either he/she will go along with what you learn here or he/she won't, in which case many folks end up find another vet. Many vets are happy for their patients to be on this forum because it teaches owners how to manage their cat's FD without bothering the vet (that's my opinion). As you've been learning, managing FD takes time--imagine contacting the vet every day and asking if the dose is correct? And then multiply that by the number of FD patients that vet has in his/her practice. Most vets simply let cats remain in high numbers and ask the owner to bring the cat in monthly for a bg check (in which case the numbers are invalid because stress drives up the numbers--and cats often experience hypo episodes because their bg drops and the caregiver isn't testing). I've invited a few vets to join our forum; there is much to be learned from the good folks here who've experienced FD in their own animals and who've for years walked alongside others treating their diabetic cats.
