Lisa and little

Member Since 2018
Ive had a rough week with my OTHER non diabetic cat not recovering from anesthesia. That said Yesterday was my birthday and my friend sent me home with brownies in a Ziploc bag which were in another bag with a bunch of things hanging on my kitchen chair I came in this evening to test little before her p.m. shot and was surprised to see her number well above 300. As I walked into my kitchen to feed and shoot her as usual I noticed something on my floor..it was the Ziploc bag full of brownies almost all eaten. She literally ate a brownie and a half but I don’t know when as I was gone most of the day. I increased her insulin just a tiny bit but I’m wondering if there is anything else I should do I am terrified

Hi! Our naughty fur babies!! So, were these brownies from scratch with bakers chocolate or from a box mix??

She probably will end up with an upset stomach and diarrhea. Keep an eye on her because chocolate can be toxic for cats. I just did a search online and it looks like she probably did not eat enough for that though.

I believe it was a box mix. And I only gave her 1.6F as opposed to 1.6 as she probably needed it anyway I juts held her dose bc I was supposed to travel this week for 20 days.

You poor thing! She may have an upset belly but other than that will probably be just fine. This story made me think of my sister's cat. He will get into and eat anything he can. You would not believe the things that boy has eaten. My sister cannot even bring in bags of groceries and leave them while she goes out to get the other bags.

It’s crazy. The bag that had a whole bunch of other stuff in it is still hanging seemingly undisturbed on the dining room chair. She literally had to dig through it and seek it out. Through the birthday tissue paper the leggings and the ziploc! I need sleep so bad it has been a week since I’ve slept more than 2 hrs at a clip and thought tonight was my night.i am scared that the chocolate will hurt her. Do you think I should call the vet ?

Can you ask your friend for more info on what was in the brownies? This article mentions calling the ASPCA to see if the type and amount of chocolate consumed needs medical treatment: https://www.catster.com/cat-food/can-cats-eat-chocolate
This vet said you might see digestive upset over the next 24 hours. Sounds like he is saying only to go to a vet if there are issues beyond that: https://www.justanswer.com/cat-health/6k3ny-cat-ate-chocolate-brownie-probably-3x3-inch-brownie.html

Personally, I think I would just keep an eye on her over the next day. My sister is at an event so I cannot call her right now or I would ask her if her cat ever ate a brownie. I swear he has eaten some crazy stuff that I would never have thought a cat would eat.

I am waiting for Alan Funt to jump out and say I’m on candid camera. This cannot be my life right now. I was going to drug myself enough to sleep 12 hours. At this point I’m setting an alarm for every 2. Good news is Molly is improving and as of tonight is eating on her own!

+4 is 431 after the brownie incident. I’m really nervous as I don’t think I’ve ever seen a red. Anything I should/can do?

Oh Lisa. What a mischievious little scamp Little is! There is absolutely nothing you can do to counteract the pilfered brownie(s) except wait it out. May take a while to clear all that sugar from her system. She'll should be getting back to normal by later tomorrow depending on when she actually had her goodies.

You may want to pick up some canned pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling. It is good for treating both diarrhea and constipation. You may need it. When I open a can I put it in ice trays and freeze it. Then it will be on hand if I need it again.

Thanks all for guiding through my crisis AGAIN! This little bugger ...I can’t believe she found them. +9 is 357 so I guess she’s on her way down. Never a dull moment! A bit of diarrhea In the box but so far nothing crazy. Another learning experience duly noted!

what was in the brownies
Better a box mix than melted chocolate or Fryers cocoa powder. Check the label for preservatives etc.
Daniel has a weakness for unflavored probiotic yogurt and I've been told more than once it's okay for cats in moderation. It might help settle her tummy.
Don't feel too bad, when Hannah was a puppy I caught a glimpse of a wagging tail in the dining room. She had scarfed down a plate of chocolate chip muffins. :banghead:

For any human diabetic, "the recent introduction of xylitol as a substitute for sugar in grocery stores has increased the potential for toxicity. Xylitol is perfectly safe for people, but because of different metabolisms, it can be fatal for dogs and cats". That's a bit vague, can be, better safe than stupid. Same dog once ate an entire bag of Goodies, had to rent one of these.
