Maynard Vet Visit

Well, the vet visit was interesting.

2 vets were looking at Maynard's upper lip where the bottom teeth are now poking it. They both said they have NEVER seen this issue in their 30 yrs experience. They were pretty much stumped. Most cats just form a type of "caluis" there and have no issues. Maybe with him being 18, it is just going to take more time to sort this out...........

The vets came up with an idea to try and stitch his upper lip up some to make the teeth miss it. They want to stitch it up, on the lines of a face pull/lift. They are guessing along the lines of the joker face-look???? I have another appt on Monday morning to do this, but now that I have the weekend to think it over, I don't think I am gonna do this. nailbite_smile

He got another antiobiotic shot and he seemed to want to lick some AD a few times yesterday, which is more than he has been since the teeth extractions.

Today, I am mainly syringe feeding when he doesn't want to lick up any food. It is so stressful for him and he HATES it.

I am at my wits end. It is way, way, way too much stress to take him out and it is too much stress to syringe him all day long. He had scabs on the sores where his teeth were poking in before and he ripped them off on the way to the vet!!!! :-x I think maybe it is his tongue that gets out of control and I think he has maybe bruised his tongue underneath with one of his teeth, so it is sore.

He has been laying on the bed with me for the rest of the weekend, purring and loving up on me. He curls up and doesn't seem to be uncomfortable. I gave him some of his bup today after I syringe fed him. I figured it would calm him down after the stress of it. I don't know if he is in pain or not, and as long as I have it, he is going to get it.

I think I am just going to leave it in God's hands and syringe feed him when I can get something into him.... It's getting to be where he bolts and runs from me when he sees me coming in the room with the syringes and that breaks my heart!! I am going to let him lick what food he wants and let him be. He drinks water just fine and has no issues with that.

I don't know. Maybe I am bad for not trying to fix this, but I just can't see putting this poor guy through anymore. He seems like he is so happy and content when he is at home with us.

Cant they just remove the bottom two canines as well? they arent going to be much use anyway..

The purring and loving on you sounds like he is happy enough so I would keep syringe feeding to keep his strength up..

I mean you gotta think these cats we have are spoiled silly. We have to go to work, deal with issues and stress and money problems and worry and all sorts of BS. Housecats only worry what flavour of dinner they are going to get tonite and which warm spot to sleep in. They can get over themselves and handle a little syringe feeding. They might not like it but I would take that life and lack of stress over mine any day!!
They might make a big issue out of it but its just cos they are used to being treated like rockstars.. and they are total divas

Try some of these ways to tempt him to eat as well.

FortiFlora -- a probiotic you can get at vets or online. is very smelly and cats love the taste of it.
parmesean cheese
smashed crumbles of dry food
bonito/tuna flakes (Can be found at Asian markets or sometimes in the Asian food section of a large grocery store.)
halo chicken treats (freeze dried chicken) -- crumble into dust over food -- my Wolfie loves this stuff.
pour a little water from tuna in water over food (I use low sodium/no sodium added as other kinds in water has veg. broth in it and I assume that means onions, which are toxic to cats and it shouldn't contain soy -- check labels)
powdered oregano. yep sounds weird . but some cats like it and it will entice them to eat.

other ideas of foods to offer your kitty to stim appy:
trader joe tuna for cats
baby food -- beechnut or Gerber Stage 2 -- you want a baby food that is only a protein + broth (although the Gerber contains cornstarch). It should have no onions or other additives. some babyfoods have onions . please read labels if you can't find beechnut.
kentucky fried chicken
deli turkey /chicken
plain cooked ( boiled or baked ) chicken breast
canned chicken for people (watch the label that their are no onions)
chicken broth -- low sodium

Well, they said removing the bottom teeth while they are in good shape is a big, big job and they may end up breaking his jaw trying to get them out. nailbite_smile

I really don't want to put him under again anyhow! I am not sure I would get lucky with that twice......

everyone at the vet's office said he looked so good for 18, they would have never thought he was 18....

Oh, he has a black nose like my J.D.

I wonder if you could somehow ask the dental specialist I used Dr. James Anthony. He seems to know a lot and his Bio sounds like he is very very experienced.

I used the East Hilliard Veterinary Specialists just west of the Columbus, OH metro area. Two of the vets there specialize in veterinary dentistry. Maybe your vets could consult with them. Or you might come here.

For Spitzer, whose bottom 2 canines we're poking into the roof of his mouth, they shortened those, did the equivalent of a root canel and filled them. It resolved the problem.

GOOD NEWS!!!

I am not sure what happened, but he is eating on his own tonight! He had the bup a few hours ago, so maybe it is still working! And......I think he finally figured out that the top 2 teeth that were so painful are gone!!! :RAHCAT

He ate more this evening that I have seen him eat in the past week. He took actually big open mouth bites and went back twice. And then I made pork chops for dinner and he actually sat by me, so I gave him about 5 or 6 pieces and he ate them right up!!! WOW Maybe........he realized that if he eats.......he doesn't need the syringe food. And what a trade off that is!

Hopefully, this is a turning point. A couple mouth/tongue issues, but he seemed to work through them. :thumbup

PLEASE say many prayers and keep him in your thoughts that he keeps this up!

Hi,
I'm dealing with a dying computer so I hadn't seen this update til now.

Many prayers that he has turned the corner and will continue eating on his own.
If my computer wouldn't crash... I'd go back and read the history again.

AD ... is that one of the prescription foods?
I read all the time that most cats don't like it that much.... if that's the case here,
it may also help to get him some other brand of canned foods...

eating is key to him thriving... with all the dental issues.l.

OMG Ceil! What wonderful news! Going through such trauma at 18 I guess he just had to "get his feet under him" to figure it out. I'm so happy for you both. What a relief. Still sending prayers for many good nom nom days ahead.
