I'm getting mixed messages about the insulin storage too, so I put it in the fridge even though it's been out almost a week now since I got it.
Yes put it in the fridge, what's the expiration date in it, is it a vial or a pen?
If you don't see any white floaties in it , it should be fine
Let's say if you were already giving insulin and getting good numbers and all of a sudden the numbers were really high then the insulin could be no good .
Once you start giving insulin and seeing what the BG numbers and seeing that they are dropping during the course of the 12 hours ,then the insulin is ok

Here is a link explaining what abbreviations mean ,etc

@Anjee
You might want to start another thread (post) it's getting long, they like us to start a new post if there are more than 50 posts
Go to the Welcome and Main Forum ,like the one you did here and I would put
May 3 , 2023 New Member Shell shocked at Hypo then link this post the one the one we are using now to the new one
You would type Previous Post and link it
where you would start writing
The one you would link is up top ,above that picture of that cat in the upper left hand corner
It's https://feline diabetes.com/FDMB/threads/may-1-2023
That's what you would copy and then you can paste it to the new post . Do you get it lol

Gotta go out for awhile but I'll check it later

I'm sorry, "not to give insulin if the AMPS" is what?
If it’s 200 or less. Anything above 200 it’s considered safe to shoot. At first anyway, with practice you can shoot lower numbers. If you look at Bobo’s spreadsheet linked in my signature, you’ll see I have but you wouldn’t being new to all of this and being so worried about hypos

In order of sequence: Ok, now you got me crying at work! ;-) THANKS so much for that vote of confidence and all the great info that I could sooo relate to as Celia Cruz was just diagnosed recently too. My vet said the Libre sensor is really expensive. Is that true? It sounds like it notifies you of his BG? Does that mean less BG tests? And I'm not familiar with the "skin fluid" (?). And when you needed the high carb treats, did he have symptoms like seizures or wobbly gait or something? I am terrified of seizures because I used to have a rescue cat that had cluster seizures and he passed during one. Yeah, I'm getting mixed messages about the insulin storage too, so I put it in the fridge even though it's been out almost a week now since I got it. I'm so sorry about the ear prick incidents, that has been a fear of mine too, but so far I've had the opposite happen: can never get 'enough' blood! I think it just takes practice. Thanks for telling me about testing before insulin bc like I told another member here: I was getting mixed messages abt that too because of not knowing when insulin will reach full peak or something. Yes, you are right: this message board is unbelievable! The ppl here have been so helpful and compassionate. Too bad they don't have one of these for every animal (& human!) ailment! Thanks again!

I pay approximately 40 for my sensors every 2 weeks.. (if they last that long) but I have had to pay the 80 once. So yes it is expensive.. The sensor doesn’t just auto load (that is the Dexcom) I have to scan the sensor with my phone to get the reading. It does have an alarm that will sound as long as the phone is within range and connected to the sensor. I do not rely on it for it hasn’t gone off a few times when he has gone below 70 ( I have mine set to 75 to sound so I can start to treat him before I get any symptoms of hypo. I haven’t had any symptoms and I hope I don’t get a symptomatic hypo.. my vet told me to start giving a few treats around 80 to help prevent a hypo. I have only seen the numbers from the sensor. When I went to do his actual BG I couldn’t get his ear to bleed either., after 3 pokes and milking his ear i got an error for not enough blood. So I’m still working on getting better at that but I’m not scared to do it anymore but I still will poke with the sensor occasionally if I am getting weird numbers. Or it errors out and won’t scan and he is under 100 but yes with the sensor I don’t have to poke him.. but he was a good kitty for it.. and he has to wear a shirt so he won’t rip it off.. he has on a few of them.. but I called the company and told them the sensor came off after 8 hours of placement , then another one just stopped working after 4 days at 5 am when he was sleeping with me (it has an alarm if it stops working) and they sent me a new one.. just had a white lie of my kid.. vs my cat. But yes the sensor is expensive but it has helped me with my kitty. I am gone at work for about 40-50 hours a week and my neighbors have to come scan him for me and checking on him especially since I don’t know what is going on with with Lower numbers that is totally not normal for him but it’s looking like the new normal. Im trying to cut my hours to be home more with him.

and as for the cycles and the lowest point. I thought I knew pikas but recently I don’t know what is happening. His Nadir today was at 630 pm and I gave his shot at 8 am.so I don’t know.. Usually I had my lows around 12-2. But yea every cycle is different.. and you are constantly learning.. every cat is different but you bond so much with your cat through all this.. keep up the amazing work!

How to handle low numbers
https://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/dont-panic-or-how-to-handle-low-numbers.210109/

Also with new members we usually tell them not to give insulin if the AMPS ( AM Pre shot) that's the first test you do in the morning. PMPS ( PM Pre shot) first test you do 12 hours after the AM shot
Always post for advice

Part of that process is getting a feel for basic concepts:
  • Onset - the length of time before insulin reaches the bloodstream & begins lowering blood glucose
  • Peak/Nadir - the lowest point in the cycle
  • Duration - the length of time insulin continues to lower blood glucose
Many people on Lantus find that getting a +2 can be an early indication of how the cycle may go. If it is significantly lower, it means you'll need to continue to monitor , but if the +2 is higher than preshot, it usually means that you can take a break from testing.

Usually with lantus the onset is @+2 ( 2 hours after giving insulin)
Nadir it can vary but it's usually around +6

Notating this all in a doc. Thanks eternally!

Very interesting. Thank you for sharing that. And you're so lucky to have neighbors to help! I hope you'll be able to cut your hours, I can only imagine being away from her that long and here I'm only part time and it feels like we still never have time together because when you're home: you're trying to play catch up. Thank you for the motivation and to you as well!
