Max spraying...driving Bean nuts

Hi everyone

I have been quiet of late, but do sneak in here now and again. Max is still in remission (jinx), but boy do I have a mega problem on my hands. About 3 months ago, more of less he started spraying. Spraying has turned into peeing....everywhere. He is 12 years old and was neutered at 6 months. If it's soft and cushy , it gets peed on. His blood sugar is totally normal, so I know there is no infections. Nothing has changed in the house. I'm sure this is 100% behavioural, but I have tried everything (yes, there is Feliway plug in and spays by the litre...it doesn't work), but I'm at my wits end to stop it and it looks like it's getting worse. I didn't want to go down this road because of his diabetes, but I'm facing the possibility that this is my last option. I believe there is some success with Anti depressant pills (Prozac) and spraying. I would like to here from anyone on this board that has a diabetic cat that is on anti depressants. Does it affect his blood sugar? Side effects?

BTW, my husband is driving me insane threatning to put Max to sleep, that's how bad it's gotten. I don't think he would ever have the heart to do this, but I'm totall stressed out with just the thought. If anyone can help, please chime in.

ah crap!

i have one who took to pee'ing on my fiance, in bed, in the wee hours of the morning. he wasn't spraying, he would just pee on him while he was sleeping.

of course had him medically checked out for infections, etc....and that was all negative. vet diagnosed idiopathic cystitis and said most likely stress was causing him to do it.

put him on prozac, behavior stopped. no more pee'ing on anything other than the litter in the box.

weaned him off prozac once but within a month or so, he pee'd on fiance again soooooooo back on the prozac he went and again, no more pee'ing.

he's not a diabetic and it's never done anything to his BG levels and i've seen no side effects from it

i know there are others using prozac with their kitties but can't remember what all for. i know dian and wheezer recently put one of her foster diabetics on it for some obsessive licking behavior and it helped with that. maybe pm her to see if it effected his BG levels, if she doesn't see this thread :-)

I've got cats on prozac but none are my diabetic. My Max is a peer/sprayer too. May be it's the name? The prozac does help him curtail his pee activity, but he does still do it. HOWEVER, the stressers (his brothers) are still in the house. It has helped the other cats on prozac a lot more.

Something probably of set Max off. It might not have happened 3 months ago, might have been longer. Stevie started spraying 5 months after I brought a kitten home. If they see a cat outside, the spraying gets turned up a notch. :?

My cats are on 5mg once a day and prozac is cheap. Comes in 10mg pill that you easily split in half. You can also get in a transdermal if your Max if tough to pill, but there are issues with making sure the cat is getting the full dose. But some is better than none in many instances. You can also get it compounded but that wouldn't work for a diabetic cat.

Considering your situation (I do feel your pain), it sounds like you're at a point where the stopping the peeing has to take priority. I don't see why prozac would increase his BG's, but even if it did it's better than putting him to sleep or even dealing with the pee every day. Keep in mind it does take some time to build up in the system so you probably won't see results right away.

There are other meds you can try too. Pretty much any antidepressant is available for kitties. Of course check w/vet before giving your cat some of your zoloft. ;-)

You may want to curtail Max to one room. Until we put some foster cats in my office, we kept our Max in there. Of course foster cats don't help the peeing situation. I know someone had a screened-in area outside that they let their peeing/spraying cat in daily. He would spray out there. I have a screened-in pool and they spay outside much more than they do inside.

There is also a calming collar you might try, http://www.kvsupply.com/KVVet/produ...alse&mscssid=3A22171CC9634ADE839CB9B1534A1AB6 Wow! Their price has gotten even lower than the last time I looked. Some PetSmarts carry it too for $14'ish. Calming collar is like wearing Feliway.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for your replys. Yup, he is wearing the calming collar 24/7...not much chnage there but I keep it on him anyway.
I'm going to consider the Prozac for sure. I added another kitty litter to the house on Friday with different litter, I have 6 now for 4 cats...and I don't know if something small like that can make a difference but he hasn't peed the whole weekend which is a mega bonus! We will have to see how the week goes. Thanks again guys
