My Max has been on 1 unit Vetsulin twice a day since Sunday - I had to work yesterday and today so I did not get to get mid day tests in on him but I do leave frozen food pods out for him although I don't think he has eating much of it. They are really missing their dry food! I have 3 others that are not diabetic and they are all mad at me!! My question - please look at Max's spreadsheet. His numbers are still on the high side before shot in mornings and preshot in the evenings - not sure how low they are dipping in between. I will be home the rest of the week so I am wondering should I increase his dose to 1.5 units starting with this evening dose and see what his number do tomorrow - as I will be able to test more?? I'm new - just diagnosed a few weeks ago and this is still trial and error - so please advise... Thank you

I used my own judgement and increased by 1/2 unit, giving him 1.5 units. Will do same in the morning and get some tests in during the day. Wish me luck, I'm so afraid I'm going to do harm to him!!

Hi Pamela sorry I don't know anything about Vetsulin. Will you be able to get some tests in tonight?

Don't know about Vetsulin either, but I just wanted to let you know that as long as you're home testing, you're pretty much in control of his blood glucose!! That's why we're so crazy about making sure people test.....if they drop lower than you want, you just give some high carb food to bring them up

Make sure to get some tests on the PM cycle too...at least before you go to bed at night....a lot of cats go lower at night, so it's important to know if you really need to set an alarm so you can test again or if it's safe to snooze the rest of the night

I think the 1.5 was a good decision

I will and thank you!!

Hi Pamela, I'm a Vetsulin user too. I think your increase will probably be okay, just remember to test a little more frequently, till you know where the 1.5 will take him. :)

Gave him 1.5 last night and this morning, please look at his chart, I'm thinking about increasing to 2 units tomorrow. Thoughts??

Hi Pamela. I would probably leave him at 1 unit for a day or two to see where his numbers go once his system has a chance to adjust to the dose, but that's just me. He would probably still be safe at 2 units, but I would worry about creating a bounce. Sometimes you just have to hold at a dose for a couple of days to see where the numbers are after the dust has settled, so to speak! :)

I think that is what I will do, I just changed him yesterday to 1.5 from 1, numbers little better today, I will wait till maybe Friday and see how they look and of course ask for your thoughts before I do!! I value your experience and input!

Note: Dose adjustments are made based on the nadir, the lowest glucose post-shot, not on the pre-shot values.

Well I am a bad mama, but Max has survived! Wasn't home in time for his pm shot as planned, so I skipped it altogether. His 7:00 am reading is 297 (only!) that's good for him!! Go age and stay with the 1.5 Vetsulin or go back to 1?? Thoughts please?!?

Hi Pamela. You're not a bad kitty mama, it happens to us all sometimes!

Looking at Max's SS, I would probably stay with just the 1 unit and see where he goes with that. That's a much lower AMPS than he's had before, so I would definitely err on the side of caution. And better to be too high for a day than too low for a moment! :)

Max is looking good. Dropping numbers and doses is a good response!

think BJ thought you were using one of the depot insulins. With Vetsulin, you consider both the nadir and pre shot
