Max - remission with diet change

My 12 yo cat Max had levels of 25 mmol/l before I switched to a wet canned diet. My vet had 0 experience with Lantus (I am in Canada and my vet is a small town vet. They are still prescribing Caninsulin which I had been advised against so picked up Lantus myself at Costco after enough research) so I came here to learn all about feline diabetes. I did my own home glucose curves and found to my horror that my vet had literally no clue what she was doing. Fortunately after sticking to the Friskies meat pate flavours my dear Max has now levels of under 5.0 mmol/l consistently throughout the day!! I feel confident he just needed a diet overhaul and it seems that is enough to have saved him. I did give him insulin shots in the beginning but after following the SLGS method and his diet change I realized he wasn't needing them. HUGE thank you for this website and the forums in completely saving my sanity, money and my Max!
Is there anywhere I can sell my remaining Lantus and syringes? I am annoyed that I had to buy all this stuff and didn't need it but at least we don't need it and I didn't listen to my vet! I have 4 refills left and about 80 syringes or so

Yay for Max! Remission after a short course of insulin and a diet change is common in Lantus kitties. Great job on helping Max get there!
I see you found the Supply Closet, but are posting on other members' threads that are selling; you might want to start your own post to get your stuff more visibility.

Yes I did find it! Thank you!
I am truly so thankful for the legwork that people have done ahead of me and posted on here. I tried 2 different meters, different flavours of wet food, all while continually taking his blood glucose measurements and I have to say everything I read on here was true. The food charts on here helped so much! You don't need expensive vet food (I did buy a little bit to try and was horrified at how bad they affected his blood glucose). Max has got his health and energy back and his weight is almost approaching healthy. My vet not only prescribed the wrong levels of insulin which would have killed him, but they didn't believe I would be able to do all this myself at home! It really made me upset that my vet didn't have any faith in me and my abilities and gave me such wrong information and tried to sell me stuff that would have made him totally dependant on insulin. I am glad that we have such a great resource here to help our kitties ourselves. I can't even imagine what would have happened had I listened to them! Monitoring was definitely key as well as the diet change.

Congratulations! To echo Tiffmaxee, continue to monitor and feed low carb food. Once a diabetic always a diabetic. And make sure you have his teeth cleaned and checked periodically. Gum inflammation and /or a bad tooth is enough to take Max out of remission as is any kind of infection and pain.

What terrific news and welcome to the Falls Max! The Falls are where our OTJ kitties hang out, and it's a wonderful place. We had the same experience with Idjit. It was pretty amazing. I second Bobbie and Bubba's post, we take Idjit to the vet and have a dental every year. He gets raw gizzards and hearts to help clean the teeth and he loves 'em. I do not want him back on the juice if it can be prevented.
