I tested Max +6 and he was 223. Now PMPS he is 288. Maybe the little higher dose is kicking in? Today is the 4th day of the increase from .25 BID to slightly less than .5 BID. The levels are so similar.

How did he do over the rest of the day and this morning? I might suggest increasing to .75u at this point if you've still not seen much change in the numbers.

My next increase will be to .5 both times without getting rid of the drop of insulin. This morning's PMPS was suspect because I think there might not have been enough blood even though the Micro didn't read as an error. I didn't repeat because I already stuck him 4 times. I'll see what happens at Nadir. I'll use a needle again to make sure I get the right amount of blood. Thanks.

Sounds like a good plan. :thumbup Have you had a chance yet to update his spreadsheet?

The link in your signature is showing the last entry from 1/9. Do you have a duplicate spreadsheet maybe? confused_cat

Frankly I'm with Kpassa I'd take him up to .75u, with the numbers you're seeing a drop isn't going to matter one way or another. The longer you leave him in those high numbers the more at risk he is for organ damage as well as for him to start throwing ketones.

You want him under 240 as much of day as you can keep him. Ideally to be regulated, you want him at in the low 200s at preshot and in the mid-100s or lower at nadir.

Thanks. I will check in with my vet about this. I must have duplicate ss. I updated both for now.

I checked in with my vet. Max's BG was 133 at +7 today but has been in the 200's the rest of the time and high 300's before insulin. He said to give him .5 twice a day instead of .5 in the morning and .25 in the evening. I have tried to give an equal amount both times but wonder if I failed and that is why his BG has been high. So I will try this for several days and see what happens. I think perhaps Max's Nadir might be at 7 hours based on the lowest BG being at that time but who knows. I'll try to alternate testing between +6 and +7 to see if this is a pattern. I've been sticking him too many times at one test lately and think maybe I'm better with the 22g needle than the 33 or 31 lancets. I'll get some more tomorrow.

You can get 28g lancets that is what I use with my Casey. Look for ones that say for alternative testing sites.

Do they work as well as the 22g needles? I have a whole unopened box of 33g lancets because I thought the smaller the lancet the more comfortable the stick. The ones that came with the meter are 30g. I thought I could use them but the last few times have been a disaster. Poor Max. Thanks.

Honestly I can't answer that because I've never used needles for testing. I've always used the lancing device with the clear cap and just vary the size of the lancet as their ears learn to bleed.

I have found that with different cats different spots on the ear bleed better than other spots. With Maxwell it's like getting blood out of a turnip if I poke near the tip but if I poke right above that little double flap of skin low on the ear I get blood every time. With Autumn it's the tip of her left ear and with Musette it was the outside edge of either ear and Casey I'm still trying to find his sweet spot. Actually with Casey its more of a matter of catching an ear to poke while he's busy giving me head butts and cheek rubs lol

Thanks, Mel. I bought a box of 22g on line but since I don't know how long they will take to get here I also bought a box at the vet's. Now I'm sure the lancets will start working since I will have 200 needles. The on line ones are the terumo ones that are super sharp and I've used to give fluids. Max isn't restless so I might be able to use them for fluids should he need them. Tiffany needed the 19 or 20g because she wouldn't stay still long enough. Live and learn. I've learned about way too many cat diseases.

I'm still new enough that I have to do multi pricks sometimes too. I always feel so bad when it takes me more than one try. For me, I have found if Max's ears are even a little bit cool it's much harder for me to get a drop, and, of course, it's Winter. I've also found a lot of rubbing helps warm them up and get the circulation going.

Tell me about it. Currently my household includes 3 diabetics, 2 cardio kitties, 1 Epileptic, 1 deaf kitty and 2 that were revived still borns that just aren't wrapped to tight...very sweet but are 5 years old with the mental age of a 3 month old kitten. And I lost my big black fluffy guy to cancer a year ago. There are days I feel like I'm running a day care in a cat hospital. lol

I'm in Los Angeles where it is in the 80's and my condo is hot. I feel for you in cold climates. My box of needles will cine tomorrow so I will return the box from the vet and use the lancets today. It will be interesting to see if the Terumo needles are even easier than the ones I used from my vet. They sure work well for fluids.
