MAX AMPS 370 (1.18.19)

A better day today? I think this is the lowest AMPS he's ever had. Gave him the full 5 units and a can of Fancy Feast. I'll be leaving a frozen can out for each of them to eat while I'm at work and they'll get another can this evening about 5pm with PM shot. Fancy Feast feeding guidelines recommend 1 can per 3.3 lbs of body weight. They weigh about 10lbs or so each. Very sedentary lifestyles though, so I'm thinking three cans a day each will be enough with some supplemental low carb treats or some cooked turkey if they want some. I'm coming home on my lunch (in about 5 hours) to check Max's sugar level since he's off the dry food now. Still waiting on the B vitamins!

(Tried a ketone strip this morning but the litter absorbed his pee instantly. Still dabbed the strip on there though and it looked "negative", though not sure how accurate it is being dabbed, haha. A covered box makes it hard to catch a sample mid-stream. Maybe I'll leave it uncovered this afternoon.)

Yes, better start! I would leave box uncovered when you know your gonna test, good job testing yesterday and no dry food..whooo hooo

the litter absorbed his pee instantly.

When Luci was first diagnosed (well the 2nd time, long story) she had a few ketones in her urine. The vet gave me a baggie filled with plastic pellets so that I could set up a 'clean catch' litter box. Like these: https://www.amazon.com/PetConfirm-N...tion/dp/B00I2YTTNA/?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20

I'd take up her regular litter box at night so she could only use this one - a clean, lined pan with these beads in it. In the morning she'd use that as there wasn't anything else - and I could dip the stick right into the puddle (I had to tilt the pan a bit to get the puddle to form)...and I got a good test on many mornings - the sticks were available for dipping at Walgreens (any pharmacy carries them as people use them for the keto diet)...it was inexpensive and easy to test every morning. I'd put her LB back down for the remainder of the day. Rinse out the pellets in a strainer and allow them to dry - they're reusable. Although I must say it wasn't very nice when she made a poo in them - did that only once - and yes, I had to throw away some pellets that day - I was NOT going to try to rinse/remove poo from those pellets.

You might find this handy for catching the pee in a clean LB. It worked for me :)

And I forgot to add: Nice start this morning...he's getting there :)

Nice to see a lower number for a start.

As far as how much to feed, keep in mind, that the cat food companies tend to have pet owners overfeed. I would use the calorie a day formula to see what the caloric needs actually are. I can't remember if you had previously said that Max was underweight. If he is then use what weight he should be in the formula. The formula is cat's weight X 13.5 +70 = calories a day. So for Max if he's 10 lbs it would be 10 X 13.5 = 135 + 70 = 205 This is just a guideline and you would take into consideration their activity level.

Your link for yesterday's post isn't working.

Yeah Max on lowest AMPS yet. Wishing you many more!!!

I use rinsed lentil beans. To catch a sample when I have to. But if doing it daily, the meter is the way to go. Olive is a digger and she won't go in an empty box. Can also use packing peanuts from UPS store. The ones at Stables are absorbable so no good. Vet told me can also use shredded paper (not newspaper) if your there to catch it right away, it doesn't absorb fast, so if you have bills and a shredder, have it.

They each got a can this morning and I left some frozen turkey bits in their bowl in case they want a snack while I'm at work.

At 3 months with little to no progress and deteriorating health, do you think it's time to change insulins? My vet has already recommended it.

It takes about 6 months for a kitties body to learn to use the insulin. It's early in his sugar dance. Also, you just stopped the dry food and I think you will start to see the numbers getting better.

It may be early, but it's hurting his legs. :/

Can I up to 5.5 tomorrow and monitor closely? He's been 9 cycles on 5 units and still mostly black, red, pink. Only a few yellow and one blue.

I would give the dry food a couple days to clear out of his system before increasing. Six cycles since his last blue, hopefully you'll see some action tonight.
