Maui had been doing very well, and there were days we did not shoot his normal .5 dose of ProZinc at all because his numbers were under 160. But over the last couple weeks, his numbers have been climbing and with a few exceptions, he's been over 300 AMPS. We moved him back to 1 u twice a day (instead of .5). Not a lot of change, and this morning was the highest at 473. He seems fine otherwise -- good appetite, lively, purring. What gives? Should we get him back in to see the vet, or is this just something that can happen? I'm relatively new to all this. I do have his numbers in a spreadsheet, but I don't know how to share them.
Thanks!

Hi there:) I'm sorry that the numbers have been higher but it's awesome that you're hometesting! Sometimes high numbers...they can mean a bounce, or infection, or that the insulin wore off before their next shot/test (depending on when you're testing BG), or that they haven't found their perfect dose...or that a kitty has snuck some high carb or dry food ;-) I know others will want to know, are you getting any mid cycle tests in? I guess once the spreadsheet is attached they will know so I may not need to ask :-D

I don't know much about prozinc, but I can direct you to the tech forum that can help you set up a spreadsheet/attach it to your profile here: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18207 If you can't figure it out please reply, there are a couple of tech saavy spreadsheet whizzes who can help you and then maybe give you some advice, I'm not an expert on the causes of high numbers but wanted to say hello :-D

Really need that spreadsheet to see what is going on. I'm one of those people that help new members set them up. PM me if you want help. Having a google account set up first is needed.

If you're feeding low carb food and giving insulin regularly, yet the dose continues to increase, you might get a vet check to rule out dental/oral infection and bladder/kidney infection. These often increase insulin requirements.

I agree with Bj - first be sure there isnt a change - food, contraband. Then a vet visit.

What kind of meter are you using? The other issue is that normal cats are 50-130, 160 is a little high and maybe he just couldnt sustain it?

Looking forward to seeing the SS

Wendy
