So Mauer went blue last night at +5.
I set an alarm to check her at +6.
But I slept through the alarms, yeah two of them...
At +7 she was going up, thankfully she didn't go lower.
I even left the lights on so I would wake up easier

The "right" one, on this site, is this one

Everywhere I've read it's always 0.25U we increase or decrease by. So either thats the mistake, or a wrong chart is floating around?

If I started to use the "right" chart, I could skip the fats and skinnys. It's confusing really
Either way I think I'm sticking to the wrong one, I finally got to the point where I don't need to check it a thousand times before drawing it up.

@Deb & Wink I think I need to be more aggressive with Mauers dosage. This last month or so really made a difference. Even if she's at 16 mmol she's happy, playful, big pupils and talking. But I think it's going the wrong way again. Ugh, and its not every day I see huge clumps in the litter tray!

The conversion chart is correct. It's showing you the difference between using U40 syringes or U100 syringes FOR A U40 INSULIN.
When using a U40 insulin with U100 syringes, you still record the dose on the SS as if you are using U40 syringes. So you are doing a "backward" conversion if you are using U100 syringes.

U40 insulin syringes are fatter and the concentration of the U40 insulin is less. So when using a U100 syringe with a U40 insulin, you have to multiple the U40 insulin amount by 2.5 to get the amount to measure in a U100 syringe.

Got that?

p.s. 5 bags of litter would only last me about 2 months with my ONE cat. Extreme peeing, due to kidney disease, so I scoop a dozen times a day, at least.

I understand why we use it, I gave Mauer an overdose with the wrong syringe the first time she got the prozinc. So I get why it's there and why it's necessary.

What I don't get, is why the chart from this site has 0.20U intervals, and we say do 0.25U.

0.2 or 0.25, it's not a big difference. But all the dosing protocols on this message board were written with small dose changes in mind, and all use the 0.25U increments. Don't know the background on that.

Because the people that wrote the dosing protocols, had more experience with various insulins, and came up with a consistent reduction/increase amount. Some of it was based on scientific literature, but I can't point you to specifics.

Because the chart you are referring to takes the U40 insulin amount and converts it to the amount you draw up in a U100 syringe.
Most people that are using Prozinc, use the U40 syringes, not the U100 syringes.
They don't need to use the conversion chart if they are using the same syringes as their concentration of insulin.
U40 insulin, use a U40 syringe. U100 insulin, use a U100 syringe.

The advantage to using U100 syringes with a U40 insulin are that it let's you draw up a larger amount in the U100 syringe, and that can be easier to measure and see for accuracy. The lines are a tiny bit farther apart on a U100 syringe, if you are using the 3/10 CC syringes. The lines are WAY too close together on U100 syringes of you use the 5/10 cc or the 1 cc syringes. (The 1 cc syringes are what the cat shelter sent home with me when I fostered Wink. IMPOSSIBLE to measure a U100 insulin in those syringes, as the lines are too close together.)

It's more helpful at lower doses, under 1 Unit, to be able to measure those teeny amounts of Prozinc insulin in a U100 syringe, versus a U40 syringe.

The conversion is 2.5 times the U40 amount.

SO:
1 unit of Prozinc measured in a U40 syringe = 2.5 Units measured in a U100 syringe
0.5 units of Prozinc measured in a U40 syringe = 1.25U measured in a U100 syringe
0.4 units of Prozinc measured in a U40 syringe = 1U measured in a U100 syringe
0.3 units of Prozinc measured in a U40 syringe = 0.75U measured in a U100 syringe
0.2 units of Prozinc measured in a U40 syringe = 0.5U measured in a U100 syringe
0.1 units of Prozinc measured in a U40 syringe = 0.25U measured in a U100 syringe

The US reached a daily high of 99,321+ new covid infections for the day, yesterday, Friday 10/30/20.

Our clocks change, falling back 1 hour tonight, Saturday 10/31/20. Second full moon of the month, which makes this a Halloween Blue Moon. There won't be another blue moon on Halloween for 19 years. So I need to take advantage, and get good looks at this year's Halloween Blue Moon.

Oh my God I love her!
So I started the dryer and went out in the garden for a smoke. The whole time I was out there I could hear her talking at the dryer.
I was sitting out there giggling thinking maybe ill get a blue amps! Talking, huge pupils, very awake and happy.
19.1 Made the insulin ready. But it didn't make any sense so I did another test after she ate, 19.8. Oh well... insulin on board.

I live in the outbreak region. Later today 7 counties will have more restrictions, thankfully not mine specific, but my neighbor county will be in a total lock down. We might be the new epicenter

So something was off yesterday, she didn't really go down.

I really really like what's going on! Blue and green during the day, higher at night. In the future she'll need blue in her pm cycle too, but for now I'm comfortable with the numbers she's gives. And then we can talk about blue pre-shot numbers, but for now I really dislike those!

So we're killing those minks. On Saturday a driver didn't make sure his cargo was secure.. so he dropped dead, swollen and really stinking minks all the way from the farm to his destination. Mostly on the freeway that got shut down, so they could clean up his mess.
The government says they aren't infectious anymore. But those who aren't being burned for heat, is being buried in mass graves on selected spots, and sealed with chalk. So I don't know what to think really..
But he dropped them!!! Freaking all over!!!

I'm quite amazed. Who would have thought breaking all the rules would be the way to go?!
I don't even see a diabetic cat anymore. During the night she can occasionally pee a lot. She hasn't been drinking for a long time. She's alert, resting a lot but is aware and awake.

About the drinking... so Miver is possibly a bit constipated. But I simply can't get him to drink anything. No dry food, only raw and canned so I'd believe he's hydrated enough. But apparently not? I gave him a little subq fluids yesterday - it's on prescription so I'm not too thrilled to use it since it's really!!! unusual for clientes to rehydrate their pets at home with subq fluids. So I'm not sure I can get my hands on anymore. But it worked!
I'm already mixing water in their canned food, he won't take it from a syringe, already have a water fountain..
Any thoughts on making water more appealing? I know, totally reversed situation here!

I'm so glad it's finally going the right way with Mauer. She also lost a bit of weight!

Can't think of anything else to increase Miver's water consumption that you aren't already trying. Although, some cats love ice cubes. Maybe add some ice cubes to the water? Or put some ice cubes in a dish and see if Miver goes for them?

Have you tried a little bit of plain pumpkin or winter squash in a small dish for Miver? Some cats love pumpkin, and will lap it right up. The pumpkin adds fiber to the diet and can help with constipation. Only a little bit at first, or Miver may end up with diarrhea. Perhaps try a teaspoon or so with him.

I did hear that the government had no authority to kill the mink. When your livelihood is taken away, like it has been for those mink farmers, they have no idea how they will survive, now or in the future. Suicide is not the answer. That leaves everyone around you devastated and in a worse situation.

Actually a very good idea with the ice cubes!
He gets half of his food from the freezer and he loves it.
Haven't tried the pumpkin or winter squash, I don't even know what a winter squash is
I don't believe I can buy pumpkin all year round either.
But I've used slippery elm with good results I think.
Also tried HUSK seeds, lactolose, paraffin, microlax. The lactolose worked like a charm but it took months to get him of it again with a slow taper. Also the royal canin fibre response worked...

I really don't know where he gets this amount of hair and fur! He is not shedding and he doesn't groom Mauer. Even MY hair is in there! I wonder if its totally unreasonable to think his bowl is full of fur and it's just being stored there until something catches it on the way out?
Darn a puzzle! He is brushed regularly, so is Mauer. He eats grass but it never comes up the "right" way....

Is canned plain pumpkin or orange colored squash available? Doesn't have to be fresh.
A winter squash is one of many types of squash that keep for a longer period of time, over the winter months. They have thicker, harder skins than summer squash do (zucchini, yellow crookneck, pattypan, delicata are some types of summer squash) So something like butternut, acorn, hubbard, kubota, etc. Here is a picture that shows many types of winter squash. The one thing they have in common is the usually orange colored flesh, beneath the skin.

Weight gain for people is much easier than weight loss. Same idea for cats. It will take time for her to lose more weight. Every little bit of weight loss helps her to process the insulin better.

It's odd that Mauer hasn't been blue during the PM cycle for some time now. Means more nice sleep for me, but seems odd.
Hopefully she'll show me a blue amps for the first time on prozinc!

Well, you've been giving Mauer a greatly reduced dose in the PM, so her BG levels go much higher overnight and she winds up in those pinks and yellows BG ranges for AM pre-shot. You should think about a bit more insulin for the PM dose. I think you have reduced it too far. Especially in comparison to the AM dose. Try to even things out a bit more with the dose.

Does Miver get to go outside in your garden? Perhaps he is eating mice and voles and moles and such. Brushing helps, but you really have to get down into the underfur, and get all of that brushed and combed out of him. You could try shaving him, and see if that makes a difference in the constipation.

He is never outside without supervision, and the only thing he's been eating is a bit of grass. I'll try brushing him more frequently. But I don't think shaving him is the way to go... my hair is in there too.... and I don't wanna be bald
But I think it's old fur, I think it's been inside him for a while. Funny thing...it's really soft so maybe it's partially degraded?

Not always. +2 is when the insulin starts to onset, or begin working for most cats. But we've already discussed how Mauer doesn't seem to see any effects from the insulin until around +3.

Second factor is that the food is being digested, and that can keep the BG levels a bit higher at +2 also. It's not until around +3 to +4 that you usually see the BG levels going down after a cat has eaten. ECID of course.

We won't make you shave your head! No worries there. The soft part is because the digestive enzymes start to break down the hair also, and coat the hair with some "gunk" to make it feel softer. Those digestive enzymes are like using a conditioner on your own hair, to make it softer and easier to comb out and get the tangles out.

They have these brushes for cats that get right down into the underfur, and cut some of the hair out. Good idea! Haven't been using the furminator since it's bad for the fur, but in this case it really doesn't matter. Anything I get off him, doesn't end up in his system.
But I still don't get how my hair ends up there... it's like spaghetti - no fun to eat unless it's cut several times

And she must have been lower after I stopped testing. She didn't eat during the day, neither did Miver (who made a nice looking poop, still with fur but a lot less!) I think I've put too much water in their food.. but the dog ate it just fine, so it wasn't that bad

I feel like I'm used to being up every night testing, but if she has a blue pmps I wake up almost every hour
I get my 8 hours of sleep usually but it doesn't feel like it...

I'm sleeping so horrible. How did you do it, Deb?

I've had chronic insomnia for decades. That helped me to manage Wink, since I was often awake anyway. Still wasn't easy and it's too easy to get run down and get sick if you aren't getting enough sleep and taking care of yourself with diet and exercise.

Could not sleep last night, sciatica was acting up. So I got up super early, like 4:45 am, got things done at home and went grocery shopping during "senior hours". I was the first customer to walk in the door this morning, at 6 am. Very tired today. Hopefully, I'll sleep better tonight. The nap I promised myself today never happened. Too busy reorganizing the food storage today.

It's perfectly normal for people to wake up multiple times a night. But then you have to do whatever it takes to get yourself back to sleep. Normal sleep cycles run about 45 minutes each, and we don't usually notice when we wake up. Turning your mind "off" is hard to do, when you are worrying about something.

I have no issue falling a sleep after I've been up. But it's not normal to be 28 and up peeing 5 times every night. And then having to poke the cat, turning on the lights and wake up even more. And having to pee that many times means I wake up cause I'm thirsty several times besides that. And yes, I regularly get checked for diabetes
I sleep like a baby when I've had a migraine and taken pain meds. No peeing or drinking but still I need to get up to poke the cat.

And I shot higher! Not high enough though.
I think I need to go even higher in her am cycle if she's pink or red. On those days she never reaches blue.

I see that Mauer was in the yellow range for the AMPS test today, 11/14/20.
Yes, you did shoot higher in the AM yesterday. But I think you need to shoot a bit higher in the PM cycle too.
For example, that 3U shot you are giving Mauer in the evening should be closer to 3.25U or even 3.5U in my opinion.

Senior hours for grocery shopping at this particular supermarket chain are 6-7 AM. That's it.

But it's not normal to be 28 and up peeing 5 times every night.

Not meaning to be too intrusive into your own health, so forget I asked if you prefer.
Have your thyroid levels been checked? For Graves disease or hyperthyroidism.
UTI (urinary tract infections) cause frequent urination in cats (humans too).
Some medications can cause frequent urination. Diuretics for example.
Drinking too much liquid (or caffeine or alcohol).

Bottom line, this is something to talk to your doctor about.

Last night was a great example. I shot a 3U she got blue, if I had given her 4U like her am dose, she would have earned a reduction. A reduction that wouldn't do anything to her BG in the am cycle. The prozinc is much more powerful in the PM cycle on Mauer. 90% of her reductions happens at night. She's never had these awesome numbers during the day, since I stopped following the usual guidelines, so it works for us. But the PM shot definitely needs some fine tuning.

I think a 3.5U would have resulted in a reduction depending the pre-shot test of course, but yesterday I believe would have been too much.
She got blue and bounced right back up

Speaking of the alarms.... I think I need to ask my neighbor if he's bothered by my alarms during the night
Why didn't I think of that before?
I'd hate having a neighbor who's alarms go off in the middle of the night, and keeps ringing!

I've been checked for that too, nothings wrong with me. Maybe it's a sympathy thing? With Mauer, that I just haven't got over yet

Yes it was blue, but still above normal range. You wanna see numbers around 85-110. Remember normal on a human meter is 50-120. Those nice healing green and low blue numbers are the goal to heal that pancreas and hopefully achieve remission. Although I agree 4 might be too much. I would try 3.5.

I'm on my way up there, I just wanna go slow so I can see what's happening. And I'm quite fine with the higher blues in her PM cycle.. I am building up my courage to see her in the greens
In comparison to a month ago I feel great about her AM numbers, on the good days - today is not one of them
So my head kinda needs to be on board, knowing it isn't dangerous.. when I stress Mauer is stressed too, and that doesn't yield anything good
The goal is definitely to get her down in the healthy numbers! And hopefully stay there!
