You say the Max Cal is lower carb, when I checked it out on Catinfo.org it says 14%. That's a big high for a diabetic cat.
It's not so easy to increase the fat% because she has pancreatitis.
Is there a "normal" for protein and fat? Not sure what to look for.

I think you had 2 posts going, with the same subject line. That could be part of why no replies.

Under 10% calories from carbohydrates, then more protein than fat is desirable ... and expensive. If you can get it 50/50 protein/fat, you're doing pretty well.

I know there were a lot of posts on Saturday, 3/22 by the time I got around to checking the board later in the evening. I think there were around 50 posts for me to check out.

We might have just missed your question. It happens.

Thanks for the replies and explanation.
I have ordered the IAms Max Calorie wet food but am concerned about the carb count. I heard that it is 14% which is too much for my diabetic Martha. Someone on this board said it was low carb. Does anyone know about this food? I definitely need to put some weight on Martha, she just keeps losing and losing but don't want to start getting off-the-chart high bg numbers.

If Martha is losing too much weight and she needs the slightly higher carb food for now to help her gain back some weight, then you need to give that food to her. You would probably need to adjust the insulin dose upwards to compensate for that slightly higher carb food. Let's see what happens when you start to feed her that food before adjusting the dose.

According to vet Dr. Lisa Pierson's food chart, that Iams Maximum Calorie Plus is 9% carbs. It's on page 29 of that food chart.

This is interesting.....I am looking at page 29 of her chart and it is telling me 14%. The date of my chart is September 2012--is there a later chart that you are viewing?
I do hope it turns out to be 9% but if not, I am willing to follow your advice and go ahead and put her on this food (if she will eat it). My little girl has come down gradually, from 18 pounds to 8.88. I have her on pancreatic enzymes and she seems to be feeling better, will see how the weight goes.

If the Max Cal doesn't work for Martha, you may want to try Evo 95% Chicken & Turkey, which is pretty high in calories, but less in carbs (I think it's about 2% or so, although I could be wrong). Here's the info on it:

Calorie Content: (Metabolizable Energy - Calculated) 1349.8 kCal/kg; 504.8 kCal/Can

I buy the 13.2 oz. cans, and it's about 38.2 calories/oz.

I, too, need to watch Blackie's weight very carefully. Currently, she's eating 5.4 oz./day, which is 206.28 calories total/day. She does very well on it, and is maintaining her weight nicely.

I hope that you'll be able to get Martha's weight issue under control very soon.

Thanks, Angela. I think I will try some of this food. The only problem is, neither one of my cats likes the "good" stuff. But I keep trying, and love hearing about new things to try.
According to Lisa Pierson, the Chicken and Turkey is 4% carbs, which is good, and .88 phosphorus, which I also need to watch.

Food transitions often go better when done gradually.
Try removing 25% of the old and replacing with 25% of the new for a day or two.
Then go with a 50/50 mix for a couple of days.
Next, 25% old to 75% new.
Abd finally, switch completely to the new food.

Consistent doses, consistent testing including getting those mid cycle test (which are extremely crucial, btw), and a low carb wet food diet can help to lower those preshot #s, and potentially get her into remission (the latter won't work if you continue to do what you're doing).

Good luck!

Yes, you are correct that one of the columns shows 14% carb content for the Iams Maximum Calorie food. That is the % carbs on a dry matter basis. I usually look at the Calorie % carbs. I still think this Iams Max Cal food would be ok for Martha and help her to gain back some weight.
