Hi everyone!

We are feeding Marcus Friskies pate and Fancy Feast Classic varieties twice a day with his housemates, and discontinued all dry food at the end of February. I am so excited that we began monitoring his BG ourselves. When it dropped into the green and sometimes crept up into the blue, we stopped the shots. We monitored twice daily at first, and then less so when the results began to be more consistent. We are constantly watching for any signs that he might need to get back on insulin, but hoping for the best. The few times when he has seemed out of sorts/sluggish, we have tested him and found that his BG was still in the normalish range. The regular, active Marcus has always returned within a few hours each time. We have been testing at least once a month. Each time, I have been tracking it on his spreadsheet. So, are we doing the best for him? I hope so. It looks as if diet is taking care of him.

So, when he is slightly higher (114 or so) or lower (57-61), should I be concerned? At what level would it need to be for me to consider insulin again--and if so, at what dosage? Just looking ahead...

Also, we are soon going to be out of the little lances to poke his ear. We have an Alpha tracker and the ones that came with the original kit are labeled "10" and are light blue. We are not using the 'holder' but simply use the lance to poke his ear. Is there a particular lance at Walmart I should buy? What kind are you all using?

What a great report on Marcus! :D Congratulations.

If you were using a human meter, the number where we get concerned if a cat is on insulin is 50, because we want a margin of error. However, down to 40 is fine for a cat off of insulin. I've tested a civvie at 49. For that AT, the number where we take action is 68, but there is probably some room below that which is still normal range for the cat. The AT usually reads a little higher than a human meter. You might want to ask your vet what he/she thinks is a normal range for home testing on the AT. I think the 114 is still fine. If he ever does test higher, try feeding and testing 3 hours later to see if he's come down.

As for lancets, what guage is the one you are using now? You can probably find a Relion brand lamcet at Walmart (if you are in the US), that is the same size.

So people can look back, here is the link to your last post here.

Thanks, Wendy, for your response. I think we've been so lucky with Marcus, catching the symptoms early--and above all--finding this site!!!! I truly believe that monitoring at home has saved Marcus's life. You and everyone here have been awesome. I know when I have questions, even though I can call the vet, I can also check here.

The marking on the packet of lancets says 10, so I'm assuming that might be the gauge. I'll check at Walmart for the Relion brand.
