Mango is having kidney issues

Mango is peeing where he shouldn't when we were on vacation and is drinking more and peeing more. Got blood work done and his values are going up. The vet wants him on presc. food of course. Look at my spread sheet and see that I put a few things in there. I need some help and suggestions please!
 
Just reading about this and dear Lord, they say he is in early kidney failure!!!!! OMG!!!!!!

His kidney values that really don't look bad. Really really early stage 2 kidney failure. They can live for years at this point. It's not usually even detected at the point your cat is at. The phosphorus levels look ok. He may be a little dehydrated.

So to prevent the progression of the kidneys at this point you DO NOT want to do perscription kidney food. It is high in carbs and low in protien. This will lead to really high bg levels and muscle wasting. You don't need that unless your cat was approaching stage 4. Your cat is BARELY stage 2. What you want is a low carb, lower phosphorus food. Look at the food list and pick something under 10 carb and under 250 phosphorus. I fed bff caned foods. And I'd add a few more water bowls or fountains around, an extra litter box, and add a little bit of water to his food.

There's a really good group of people on Facebook called Cats with Chronic Renal Failure who can really give great advice.

Don't panic. He's not on deaths door. With early intervention and awareness he could still potentially live a long time.

I kind of like it more when they say is Chronic Kidney desease, sounds less apocalyptic, and looking at his numbers (Creatinine, BUN and SDMA) he's barely early kidney disease stage 1-2 which means he does have a kidney issue but is not really too bad yet (is good that you catched it this early that will give him a much better chance of living a pretty normal long life) is very much manageable with diet and probably some supplements (b complex, omegas ), but NOT with a prescription kidney food because it's way high carb (I used one to avoid hypo once ) and that would mess with his diabetes wich you do not want especially now that he's on remission, and because an uncontrolled diabetes will damage his kidneys more.

As Janet said look for a low carb low phosphorus diet, that will address both issues, with his phosphorus levels you do not need to worry much about phosphorus control yet but is better to try and keep his level as it is right now in order to help protect his kidneys do take a look at Tanya's CKD site is really very good
 
Thanks everyone! No, I will NEVER give presc. food! Now though, here I go worrying and getting myself upset. I handled FD I know I can handle this. I am glad I caught it early.
 
I find it very hard to use that forum. Now I am getting emails by the 30's. I am not that good at computers and now I am stuck with the emails. I just wanted to know what is a good food for both diabetes and kidney problems.

Like you and Janet I'm not fan of their format but they do know their stuff and are very nice people, you can configure your account to not recibe any notification or just one daily go into subscription and choose the option there

For the food take a look at Dr Lisa's list and choose one that is low carb and under 250 phosphorus (if you can find one that he likes and suits you lower than this even better )

I was on that site for a while as well, since I also have a diabetic/kidney cat. a few months ago someone started a thread and not sure how it evolved into what it did, but basically Helen (the creator of the site) got involved and actually labeled people who do not "contribute" daily or regularly to the site as being basically leeches just looking for free information and she had no use for those people. it got pretty ugly. at that point I quit the site. not sure about everyone else's situations of course but in my life I have MANY priorities, one of which is my cat, however, I cannot and do not wish to dedicate 100% of my free time to counseling others, especially in matters that I do not even feel like I have enough knowledge to do so. I of course want to help anyone who I can with the knowledge and experience that I do have, but she was suggesting that everyone, regardless of their experience, needed to contribute to every thread even if just for "support". you can still use the site for info, but I would not advise joining the "group". like you say as well, the emails never stop coming.

at any rate - my cat was first indicated to have kidney issues almost a year ago. he seems to be doing pretty well. he has ups and downs of course, but usually short lived. he was put on prescription food at first too. and since I didn't know any better, tried it. for 1 day. after 1 day on that stuff his BG was almost 500. the vets suggestion for that was to up his insulin to meet the consequences of the food. not happening. it took me some time to get him regulated in the first place, I was NOT willing to mess that up in a day. so, after doing the research, mostly on this site - the food chart - I came up with a few brands that work for both AND that my picky eater will eat. Whole Earth Farms Duck Pate, and Whole Earth Farms Chicken Pate, Organix Chicken and Organix Turkey. I am sure there are others, but these are just the ones my guy will eat. one other thing to consider is that for whatever reason, the food chart on this site and the food chart on Tanya's site are NOT the same. I don't know why. I just tend to stick with this site because it is much easier to read and is sortable, and I guess part of it is that I was just more used to it, and the people on THIS site have been more than wonderful to me and Rex since the onset of all this drama - even if I don't contribute daily.

I hope maybe these suggestions can help you. by the way, my boy is also an orange tabby! so handsome aren't they?? best of luck to you. and hang in there.

My Rico is 20
Dre is 19 with FD
Rico was dx early kidney decline at 11 years....I began giving SQ fluids and continue today. At first is was a few times a week and daily now. His BW is pretty awesome and I know many have other theories on when to start fluids but my vet always advises to start early to slow the progression.
Dre gets fluids as well (starting at about 16 years). his BUN is a bit elevated but the rest is good. I even backed off to see if any changes and his creat. did go up when I cut back.
Sodium levels are fine as well which is 1 thing vets that say to start later warn against.
For me watching my 20 year old cat jump on the bed is proof enough:smuggrin: (adequan injections as well)


Again I know others site what other vets advise but I can only go by the results I see and have seen with other cats over the years. Unless there is a heart issue I personally have never seen fluids do anything but good for an aging cat.
Rico did have a heart issue but we found a balance of fluids and a budesonide dose that keeps his IBD under control and his kidneys functioning very well.

Many live very happy normal lives for many years with CKD....:cat:
