Shadow is on Renavast for his CRF and I had taken him off of it temporarily while we were dealing with his chronic hairballs. He was vomiting so often that it was difficult to make sure he was getting his doses. Today I put him back on it, but it occurred to me that the maltodextrin could be affecting his BG (he gets 2 capsules in 10cc of food). Sure enough - I gave it to him at +3=73 and at +6 his BG is 130! Have any of you experienced this with maltodextrin? I guess I'll be giving him his supplements during the first half of his cycle from this point on.

It's entirely possible that the maltodextrin is causing some higher numbers.

It's an easily digestible carbohydrate made from rice, corn, or potato starch (and sometimes wheat or barley) so if Shadow is really carb sensitive, it could be raising those numbers

I'm not familiar with Renavast, but I do know that maltodextrin is in a lot of products and not surprisingly, it is not good for diabetic cats or people. When I had Tiger's Levothyroxin made into a compound, Marje reminded me to make sure they did not put in any additives such as maltodextrin, luckily, the pharmacist had not used any, but she did tell me they frequently use it. I'm learning you really have to ask questions and read labels!

Hope your Shadow is feeling better!
