I modified a 3 part ( 2 solid bottom tube and one slotted for sifting) litter box so I could get urine for glucose and ketones testing. I used rubber cement and glued 5 sewing bobbins to the inside of both solid tubs. One in each corner and 1 in the center. Then glued vinyl window screening to the outside bottom of sifting pan. The sifting part sits on top of the bobbins and creates space for urine collection. I then used Breeze pellets,( safflower seeds also work) in the box. Now the urine goes thru to the bottom pan. I replace the pan containing urine with the other solid modified tub and after taking sample, dump it in the toilet and clean the tub so it's ready for next use. I hope this helps someone because it's been tough trying to get urine until this.

I'm glad that works for you. In case you are not already aware, glucose will only show up in the urine after the glucose level is high enough to have been over the renal threshold (meaning excess glucose is then 'dumped' into the urine). Blood glucose testing is a much better method for keeping your cat safe and for being able to get them tightly regulated.

This is really an introduction/welcome area, so if you have any questions, please post them in the main health forum. Thanks and welcome!

Hi Debbie and welcome to FDMB. Your crafty solution for urine collection sounds absolutely brilliant. It would certainly make testing for ketones so much easier. We'd love to get to know you and your kitty better and we can swap tips and tricks.

Can I ask you to repost your urine collection solution over on the Health Forum? This is the welcome matt so to speak and not everyone visits here a lot. Your idea is something many if not most folks here would be delighted to see and there are far more eyes on the Health Forum.

Simba and Gustav thought it was a novelty to have me wanting to get urine samples.
After first figuring out when each of them headed for the toilet, I then too had figured out a simple plastic schnaps glas was small enough to get into their pee stream.
Then came getting them used to me coming with them to the toilet and gently push up their little behinds and hold the plastic schnaps glas directly in the pee stream until it was full.
It took a while but then there was no problems at all with that. Love my Simba and Gustav ❤️

It was to get as uncontaminated 'clean' urine sample as possible.
At the vet we did the real uncontaminated sterile urine sample, taken direct sterile from their urine bladder.

If you want the best and easiest ketone testing you should get the Abbotts Xceed meter for blood sample B-ketones.

You should post a picture! I'm a very visual learner, and while what you're saying makes sense, it just goes right over my head because I can't "picture" it. I definitely could use something like this, Oscar allows me to stick ketone strips in his urine stream...but he doesn't talk to me for a little while afterwards lol. I'd love a way to test him without him feeling like I'm once again all over him/never leaving him alone lol.
