Hi,
I thought I would open up a condo this morning, as something is up with Maggie kitty. Some of you may not know us, as Maggie went OTJ officially July 12 of this year, and being a lurker, I do see some new Beans. Just last Thursday, I noticed Maggie's numbers were going up a little higher than normal. Today her bg was 221, and Christmas Day she had two low yellows. Keep in mind though that I am an Alpha Trak user, and it usually registers 30 points higher than the Relion meter. I caught her highs right away, as even though she was OTJ, I still tested her every few days. She's such an easy patient and would jump onto the sofa waiting for her test.

I think my plan will be to call the Vet tomorrow and make an appointment and have him check her teeth again and maybe a urinalysis, although she just had her senior exam early November, less than two months ago. Everything was fine, and the Vet said her teeth looked good. I wonder if things could change so quickly? As far as WCR, she's absolutely doing great with all P's, appetite very good, no excessive drinking water. One thing though she has been doing is scratching in her litter box but not always urinating! Any thoughts/advice? Thanks.

Re: Maggie - something is up - high bg#'s - Advice?

The scratching in her litter box and not peeing would concern me, since her numbers are up. I agree, you should have her seen by the vet tomorrow. And I think the people on this board recommend a c&s (Culture and Sensitivity? test) to be sent out via a sterile sample, along with a urinalisys.
I hope you get the appointment and it is as stress free as possible for Maggie. Good luck.

Re: Maggie - something is up - high bg#'s - Advice?

well I am no advice giver I do agree a vet check is a very good idea to rule out anything wrong I am sure the advisers will be on later good to see you though ;-) ((((Ann)))

Re: Maggie - something is up - high bg#'s - Advice?

Definitely a vet check and it sounds like ruling out a UTI or any kidney related issues would be important. Also, in case you were unaware, there is a recall on certain of Abbott's strips. Here's the link on the strip recall.

Re: Maggie - something is up - high bg#'s - Advice?

((((Ann)))) sorry Maggie is worrying you. A vet check sounds like a good idea, with a good look at the teeth. I agree with the urinalysis (C&S) because a change in litterbox behavior coupled with higher numbers could mean something is off.

Can you do a food test? Test and feed a small meal, then test again in 3 hours to see if her number comes down after food. It might not be relevant if she has an infection going on, but if the number does go down it will make you feel a little better.

Re: Maggie - something is up - high bg#'s - Advice?

Thanks Dyana. Yes, the Vet last time did a Culture test to be sent out via a sterile sample, along with a urinalisys. He does the needle exam to get the sterile sample (can't remember the medical term). I've never seen her playing around in the litter like this before and have noticed it twice.

Nice to see you, too, Lisa and DoLou. Maggie is sleeping a lot lately...but then with cats it's kind of normal. She's still been playful at times.

Hi Sienne, thanks, and yes I saw the recall notice, and right away I checked the Lot#'s and didn't see them on the list. Just to make sure I logged onto the Abbott website and sent them an E-mail requesting they check the Lot#'s of my strips, as they only mentioned the human meters and not the Alpha Trak animal meter. I'm hoping Maggie just has a UTI and not anything more serious. I have a copy of her bloodwork from last month, and I'll go back and review.

Hi Libby and Lucy & Jazzy,
Yes, it sure is a worry after she had been doing so well and almost reached a 6 month otj annifursary! Yes, I can do a food test. In fact she just had a mini meal about 30 minutes ago, so I'll test in 2.5 hours.

Re: Maggie - something is up - high bg#'s - Advice?

I'm thinking UTI too, so good thing Maggie will see the vet. Hope all goes wells for you guys, keep us posted.

Sorry to see those numbers, too!

A UTI can come on quickly. I wonder if there is any holiday stress for Maggie? I hope the vet visit goes well and you come up with a simple and treatable answer for these numbers.

Re: Maggie - something is up - high bg#'s - Advice?

ann, i'm sorry to see this post, but glad you're on top of this right away. let us know what the vet has to say.
hopefully, there'll be a quick fix for something simple...

Re: Maggie - +3 225

Libby, the bg three hours after her mini meal is 225, so not too much a difference. I will do another test later in the day after she has another mini meal. She is eating Chopped Grill Supreme Sophisticat and Merrick BG1 Chicken and, of course, the freeze dried chicken breast sprinkled on top.

Thanks Susan, for stopping by today. I really appreciate everybody's support.

Hi Carolyn. Well, let me see; no, it was really a quiet Christmas with just me going out with friends for Christmas lunch. There is a raccoon lurking around our apartments, and it comes right up to the patio window! She screamed her little head off the first time she saw it, but now she's always up at night looking for it. The raccoon makes its rounds.

Thanks Jill. I hope so, too, it's a quick fix. I did catch it early. She is meowing/talking more than usual, and it's really cute, as she barely has a vocal meow.

Hi, Ann & Maggie... thinking of you both. Baby has recently went back on the juice (about a week ago) after nearly 8 months off the juice. Dropping thru to encourage & support you, it really is easier the 2nd time around - after the acceptance & initial shock/disappointment. Baby is going to the vet tomorrow too, good vet vines for both.

Thanks Nicole for the support and encouragement. That's what I was thinking is that the 2nd time around it's easier as now we have more knowledge. Good luck to you and Baby, too, tomorrow.
