Mačka - PMPS 233 but AMPS 415 - Too much food?

Hi all,

Yesterday's PMPS was a hopeful 233. However this morning it bounced back to 415.
I was wondering if I feed Mačka too much.
Yesterday he had 3/4 can of Fancy Feast in the morning, 1/4 at noon and 1+1/2 can in the evening (he was hungry). Did I give him too much in the evening? I panicked thinking that he would go into hypo during the night if I did not give him enough. Night fears are the worst.
I am aware his dose still needs to be increased (planning on doing it tomorrow morning, at 1.75, since I will have time to monitor him). But I am confused about the food intake. Do I need to be ultra regular with the quantity and type to get consistant glucose results?

Thank you!
Penelope

I will let others answer on the food.

Olive when we started ran in the red numbers, if she popped a yellow she bounced because she wasn't use to it. Then she started staying in the pinks and bounced from yellow and blues. Then more in the yellows and bounced from blues. And so on.

Now pretty much blue all the time, yet every 4th day she will have yellow preshots. Almost like she is resting before continuing on her trip. Macka could be doing the same. Working down the color range before moving to the next.

Hiya Penelope! (Can I say I absolutely LOVE your name!) Looking over Mačka's spreadsheet, I think some of your fears would decrease a bit if you test a bit more. I understand if you can't do it a lot during the day, but even getting a check in before you go to bed (my before bed check is at +3) can give you an indication of where Mačka will be heading during the night. With time, the more you test, the more confidence you'll have with how Mačka is handling the insulin. Looking at the spreadsheet, I see a lot of blank spots that you can fill here and there to get an overall idea of how he's doing. I don't want to scare you, but many cats can go hypo without showing any obvious/serious symptoms. When Lou goes below 50, he shows nothing other than a bigger appetite. The only way I'd know is to test.

As far as food goes, you setting a feeding schedule can be hugely helpful to keeping numbers steady. Many diabetics do well with smaller meals multiple times per day. I'm not sure how much Mačka weighs, but my vet suggested Lou eat around 219 calories per day. There's an equation we use around here to give you an idea of how many calories to feed based on your kitty's weight. Unfortunately, I can never remember what it is. My buddy Lou is a grazer, so we feed him (mostly fancy feast) 1/2 cans at preshot and +3, then 1/4 cans at +6 and +9. Other folks have found they need to feed more in the beginning of a cycle and less after nadir to help their kitty coast and then not rise too high. Every cat is different and you'll have to tweak around with Mačka's feedings to see what works well for him.

Hi @Olive & Paula ,

I looked at her spreadsheet, what a trip! Could you tell when she was in the greens, without blood testing? Would she show hypo symptoms ?

She has been as low as 29, 32 on retest and not show symptoms. But even then you never know if having a number in the 50's would show symptoms. Some cats do and some cats don't. Sometimes she will really bug me to be fed even though she just ate but can not count on that, because she can also be ravenous when numbers are high. The only way to know is by testing.

I have to agree with Amanda - please try to get more tests in when you're home - that's the only way you're going to know what Macka's response is to the insulin he's getting - I wouldn't worry so much about the food, he needs to eat - and I see you're planning an increase tomorrow - but you don't have any tests today to see how he responded to the 1.5....how did you come to the conclusion that he was ready for an increase? I wouldn't give an increase until I was certain how low the 1.5 is taking him...the blood glucose will come down after the insulin and then starts back up again - take a look at some of the other SS's and you'll see the blood glucose dips down sometime during the cycle - typically - and then slides back up. So the insulin is doing it's work. With Macka we can't be sure how low the 1.5 took him...please try to get more tests - it's the only way to put your mind at ease to know what the current dose is doing. Best of luck to you :)

I don't think feeding is the problem, I think it’s bouncing from going lower than he is used to. He started yesterday in reds, and ended in yellows. I bet if you had tested later in the cycle last night, you would have seen a blue, maybe even lower. Count me in as someone whose cat could be below 50 (on the human meter, around 68 on the AT) and show no symptoms. Sometimes she would be hungry or hang out in front of the fridge or the testing spot, but there was more than once I woke her up to test and she was below 40. Like the others, I would caution you again increasing when you don’t know how low this dose is taking your car.
