Hi all. For members with sugarcats who also have a cancer dx, I would appreciate your input. I have heard that the cancer will send the cat into remission. Kitten's suspected lung deposits(tumors) are indicative of cancer, but slow growing. Her BG still runs high and has the bad breath which she never had. She is negative for ketones.. It is not the acid smell. I have an appt scheduled with an oncologist next month because I want to hear everything from the " cancer guy" myself. Can anyone share their experience with cancer affecting the BG. Thank you so much. t

In some cats with a cancer diagnosis, the numbers can drop. It doesn't mean they automatically go into remission.

Re. Kitten's bad breath -- are you sure she doesn't need a dental?

What happens with cancer is that the cancer cells can eat the excess sugar in the bloodstream -- so what looks like remission is really a growing cancer.

Hi Lynn
Brie has probable large cell lymphoma. I didn't do the biopsies so there is no way to know his exact diagnosis. You can see a brief synopsis on my google doc. So far his sugars haven't dropped. He was started on pred in the beginning of November and his sugars now run high.

I had a kitty with both. He did go into remission for a year before we were aware that has cancer had returned. He had VAS(vaccine associated sarcoma) so it was easy to tell the return of his type of cancer...you could feel it. I honestly believe the change in his diet along with some assistance from insulin helped him go into remission. Anyway, after his cancer came back his diabetes returned. His numbers were actually all over the place. Some days lower than others and not really requiring insulin. Not sure if the number spikes were due to discomfort(though I have been told VAS is painless). Don't know if that helps you any. Just have to remember that ECID. Good luck!

Thankyou. Your reply and the other replies to help. Why do u think the diabetes came back when the cancer returned? Thankyou.

That is what I was thinking. So, if Kitten's sugar remains hi, her cancer may not be speeding up. I did not do a biopsy( deep in lung). Her suspected cancer is slow growing. I am grateful for that. Part of me was hoping this cancer in general would help with remission without it growing. I guess her oncologist will go
Over this with me. Just wanted to hear some input before appt. thankyou so much

Maybe.. But the timing is quite coincidental. She was noted to have some minor dental concerns but nothing major. This smell bothers me because Kitten has never had a trace of odor on her breath. I cannot say the same for my other three cats. Lord. Kitten's breath smells like sick breath. I read that diabetic people with high sugars have an odor to their breath either fruity or chemically..
