One major challenge many of us with feline with DM face are GI issues & oftentimes, the question becomes what exactly is the specific diagnosis? It can be very complicated, especially when the differential diagnosis is IBD vs SCL. Many researchers have acknowledged that these 2 entities are more than likely on a similar spectrum vs 2 completely & entirely different disease states. This means the treatment can often be similar, especially if it is early in the disease course. However, a specific & correct diagnosis is important & there are ongoing efforts to discover & develop improved diagnostics to help differentiate one diagnosis from the other to provide & optimize treatment(s) for the best possible outcome.

LymphPro Feline Dx is a new (within the last couple of years) adjunctive test developed by the esteemed Dr Jorg Steiner, Director of the TAMU Gastrointestinal Laboratory & Dr. Sina Marsilio, UC Davis. It is an adjunctive test to be used with histopathology. Please see the following link to the white paper “Feline Intestinal Small Cell Lymphoma vs Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Wouldn’t You Want to Know?” (Drs Steiner and Marsilio) for more details:

AVAILABILITY/FUTURE ACCESS TO TEST.....GOOD NEWS :bighug:

This test was initially commercially available through an independent lab, but that lab unfortunately closed as of early 2021 resulting in a suspension of distribution & processing of the test.

As per Dr. Steiner, this test is going to be Re-established directly through the TAMU GI Lab (https://vetmed.tamu.edu/gilab/) & hopefully, if all goes as planned, will be made available within the next 6-9 months. They will be notifying providers as soon as they know it is ready.

Thanks for digging into that Amy. It does look like you still need to do a biopsy to obtain the sample, but this test gets more accurate results. Looking forward to hearing when it's available again.

You are welcome :). I am just sorry it isn’t available right now, especially when there is a current situation where it would be nice if it could be used.

Definitely still need the biopsies but yes, it is supposed to be the most accurate test to differentiate between SCL & IBD. The one limitation is that it is currently validated for duodenal biopsies only. Hopefully, validation for the ileum and jejunum will happen in the future.
