? Lump popped up overnight between shoulder blades...what is it?!

Hey Y'all.

Obviously, if you're reading this, you know what my question is.

Only reason I ask is I came home today, and was giving my cat her insulin and I felt a lump right between her shoulder blades; its a little bit bigger than a pea, and frankly first made me think it was matted fur (Because it was just there!). Its loose and moves around like a cyst but its seemingly popped up out of nowhere. It made me wonder if it had something to do with her insulin shots, if they were just being pocketed in the skin, or something. Except her BGs are normal, and her insulin dosages have actually gone down recently. I know sarcomas can happen with vaccines, but Kiara hasn't gotten shots since she was a kitten, except for her insulin shots.

Can something like this happen with insulin shots?

She doesn't mind it, but I do, so I figured I'd ask around here while I email the vet.

Does anyone know what this is? Or if its something to worry about? Or is it just a fatty tumor or cyst?

If you're certain it appeared almost overnight it's not a tumor. I can only say I've never heard of insulin being pocketed and that we should avoid shooting into muscle. Both my boys disliked scruff shots and the "too close to the spine" thing, real or not always freaked me out. They both got injected in the flank. Maybe you could try that for a while and see what happens to the mystery bump.

I agree, that does not sound like a tumor. It could be an infection, similar like a pimple that is under the skin. Since it is in the area where you normally inject, it is possible that some bacteria entered the injection site. I suggest using a different spot for the injection. You may want to put some Neosporin on it for several days to see if that helps make the bump disappear.
 
dog has those, pop out of nowhere..its a cyst if under skin and moves about (not attached to muscles). her’s get bigger and eventually we have to take her in to get them drain or they pop on their own and i end up squeezing the nastiness out..

tux (diabetic cat) does get what feels like lumps when i give his injections on same side for too many weeks in a row but, i don’t recall them popping up overnight like that.
 
You can feel his microchip? That's not supposed to happen. It could be possible it was injected in a non-sterile environment and/or has moved, stranger things have happened but it's unlikely an infection has taken this long to manifest. Unlikely doesn't mean impossible.

I don't feel so worried now. I'll give the other areas a try, starting tonight!

if you have been injecting only in scruff, maybe lower dose a little for the new injection site or keep a good eye on her for other areas absorbs the insulin faster/better.

I'll try, but Kiara's already down to 0.5u-1u of Vetsulin (from 2u-2.5u) 2x daily with the scruff injections since the start of the month due to drastic BG drops (Except today, because my cat can't seem to stick to her own routine, lol); my current syringes are in 1u measurements and I'm already estimating with the .5u dosages. However I plan on buying smaller 100u syringes with .5u markings and using the 40u/100u conversion to hopefully administer smaller and more accurate doses.
