We had a pretty rough night. She threw up what seemed like most of the food she consumed yesterday. A lot of it was liquid as well as the freeze dried chicken treats. I fed her some high carb wet and she threw that up too and dipped down to 2.2 or just under 40. I fed her more high carb, but she managed to keep it down so far.

She always has been a bit of a puker, and now I am wondering if some of those overnight green numbers were caused by that. But last night was worse than anything I have seen in a long time.

The only difference is that I am souping up her food a bit and giving her the chicken treats, which she probably doesn't chew well enough. She still tends to gobble down her food as if she is starving, so maybe she is eating too fast.

Is the the vomitting one of the side reactions to the diabetes?

Anyway, she was back in the pink today after all those carbs. But this morning, I decided to reduce her dose to 2.25 in case she throws up again. She seems pretty lethargic and depressed right now, poor little thing.

Honestly, this, I have no idea how to deal with if I am out of the house. Any advice would be most welcome.

Hi Kaly,
I have a puker. Tigget is almost 20 and she has always been a gobbler/puker. When she ate dry food, she swallowed it whole and up it came.

I began feeding her a raw diet earlier this year and very seldom does she puke that up. She even eats Fancy Feast a bit after eating the raw and that doesn't come up either.

I always blamed the eating too fast too. I don't see vomiting as a direct side effect from diabetes unless there is a complication such as pancreatitis. I don't know if giving a small dose of Pepcid AC a half hour or so before she eats would help or not. I never tried that with Tigget. Pepcid (famotidine) is meant to stop nausea not vomiting, but it seems to make sense that eating fast might cause nausea for some cats.

Thanks for the suggestion Vicky.

She doesn't puke every day and she has been grooming a lot more than usual, which makes sense she stopped doing that when she was really sick. But she has not puked today or asked for food like she usually does, so hopefully she just stuffed herself too full yesterday and that was the problem. *fingers crossed*

Kaly,

Please do keep a good eye on her. Puking and inappetance can be the start of Pancreatitis for sure. Please try to notice if she is lip licking(a sign of upset stomach) meatloafing(sitting with paws tucked underneath) also they will move around alot because they are uncomfortable.
If you would suspect that she is beginning to show signs of pancreatitis please take her to the vet, its nothing to mess with. Also to look for if she stops eating and starts throwing up frothy foam is another sign.

Yeah she was lip licking yesterday. I noticed because it she was so cute with it. I had no idea it could be a sign of something more.

She also did seem to be "meatloafing" for a lot of today. She was sitting jammed up in the corner of the couch for a lot of the day. But she seems better now and is sprawled out on the bed next to me. She actually seemed to feel a lot better after her late afternoon feeding.

Are there other signs of pancreatitis that I should be looking out for?

My own cat had pancreatitis and the lip licking and the meatloafing were the most obvious. She also kept getting up and moving around like she was in pain.
She also was hiding a good bit more, she hid alot anyhow. Also when it started she would not eat and then started throwing up the frothy liquid.
Others may come along and add more sypmtoms that their cats presented.
I guess I would say when a cat stops eating one should always keep a close eye on them because it may be time for a trip to the vet.
Is she eating? And is it her normal amount? Could have maybe just have a bit of upset tummy.

Yeah she is still eating whatever I give her. She is begging a little less though, but still seems hungry whenever I do feed her. And when she is actually hungry, she definitely lets me know in no uncertain terms.

ETA thanks Terri.

She also doesn't have any diarrhea and I palpated her abdominal area and she doesn't seem to have any soreness.

everything sounds fine to me. She might have just had upset tummy or could have ate to fast.

Terri

If she is a fast eater, putting a mug upside down in the plate, with the food around it, may slow her down a bit.

Pick up a pack of Pepcid AC regular strength 10mg.
Cut a tab into 4 pieces - 2.5mg each
If you see her licking her lips again, give her one piece.
It seems many diabetic cats have pancreatitis issues, and usual treatment includes 3 items:
pepcid for the stomach/ nausea - if you feel like hurling, you likely won't want to eat much
buprenorphine for the pain - pancreatitis is very painful
fluids to hydrate and flush - very easy to give subQ fluids at home so don't worry about that.

I was giving Shadoe pepcid BID, every shot time. Since I started giving her B12 shots, she has had only rare issues.

She hasn't thrown up since that last time. Last night, she licked her lips a little bit after her evening meal, but then she seemed fine. But I will pick up some pepsid ac, just in case. Thanks
