Lucky's Numbers Up Today? Normal?

I tested Lucky's Blood sugar this morning. I've been doing it every two days hoping on a slow graduation to wince a week. This morning she was at 102. She has not been over 100 since probably September when she started going into remission. Her normal numbers are anywhere from 71 to 96. Now I know that from 96 to 102 it's considered a small step. But it worries me because she has not been over 100 since September. Not sure if this is normal to once in a while go up in numbers like that? I don't know what she did prior to me taking her blood sugar. There was no food in her bowl when I got up. I checked. However, not sure the last time she at was. I tried visually checking her for any signs of some type of infection. In the palces she's usually got them UTI, ears etc. Though I do put water in her food so she does go a lot because of it. So I don't think it'd be a UTI. But she seems fine otherwise. Maybe I'm worrying over nothing but just wanted to see if this happens or if this means that I need to watch her more closely now. I plan on testing her again tonight to see if it has dropped. And probably will go back to once a day if her numbers do not improve.

Lucky is NOT on insulin just as a refresher, and for those that might not know where she's at now. She went into remission before ever needing insulin. I feed her Fancy Feast Classic flavors (except any seafood flavors as she is allergic to them), and ProPlan Chicken and Liver. She eats 2x a day. Yesterday she has a Fancy Feast Classic Beef Flavor so it's not the proplan.

Trying not to freak out I know 102 is still in good range but that under 100 is much better. It's easy to worry me with the cats. They can look at me the wrong way and I will freak out.

Hard not to worry, isn't it? :-D I think I'd keep an eye on her and see if this is a one time thing and if she goes back down. Who knows? Maybe something scared her overnight or she is a little constipated or? She is still in OTJ range. I'd keep checking and not be concerned unless you see a pattern of numbers in a higher range.

Hi MisMelzy!

When you got the 102, did you retest? There is an allowed variance in the measurement between tests so it is possible that you got one test that registered on the high side. I believe that they are allowed +/- 20% of the actual reading vs a lab.

There are also a number of different things that can affect the reading on a meter.
◾A dirty meter.
◾Outdated test strips.
◾Substances left on your hands. For example, if there is a sugary substance on the finger used for lancing, even if it’s a small amount that can’t be seen, a high blood glucose reading can result.
◾Temperature changes (heat/humidity/cold air).
◾Not a big enough blood sample on the test strip.
◾Wet fingers. Fluid mixes with blood and can cause an inaccurate reading.

I wouldn't panic about a 102 considering what can affect a reading and the allowed variance. However, upon getting a 102 (if it was out of the norm) I would immediately retest and see what happens. When I've gotten numbers with Clyde that appear to be out of character, I immediately test two more times and throw out the oddball.

How's her weight? I'm sort of noticing Dusty's OTJ numbers getting higher as he gains weight. He's still doing really good but as his weight goes up his BG seems to be climbing.

I did not test after. I didn't have time. But I've planned on retesting again tonight. She's actually lost weight. and as of late she has been constipated. Not sure why tho. She has added water to her food. She was fine with poop wise going from dry to wet but on the fancy feast she is constipated more but she's also pulling hair out from some food that had seafood in it. Will retest tonight and let everyone know.

Two ideas to help Lucky with the constipation.
1. Miralax (or generic) start with 1/8 teaspoon once a day and increase as needed. Tasteless, odorless and easy to mix in with the wet food.
2. Psyllium to add some fiber to the diet. Again, try 1/8 teaspoon once a day and increase as needed.

Also, maybe check here, Feline Constipation for some other ideas to help with the constipation.

2 of my 3 cats need daily help to keep their stools from being too hard and help to prevent the need for an enema.

I retested her tonight and she was back down to 92 which is better. I'll have to get something to help with the constipation. hoping the rest of her readings for the week are back to normal!
