Need some ideas/thoughts/advice......Lucian is not eating, period.

He was fine last night, won't touch a thing this morning. nailbite_smile

I have tried his food, his treats, 8% tuna, heated w/water, sandwich ham. The treats and ham are his favorite things in the whole world and no go.

I am very worried and plan to take him to the vet this afternoon if he hasn't eaten by noon.

Yes, I did give his insulin, he was almost 500 at AMPS, now I wish I hadn't.

Can someone explain how to feed a little with a medical syringe? I have one of those, but have never used it, had it for another cat a couple years ago.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: Lucian is not eating - Help Please!

When you go to the vet, ask if they will give you a larger syringe, for feeding.

With the little one, you need to make sure that the food you use - I found baby food works best as it is smooth texture - you can also try the pates - just add lots of water and mush it real fine, then suck it up in the syringe and squirt in mouth. I try to squirt in cheek area, so as not to choke the cat by going straight down the throat.

The trick is to make sure you can fairly easily squirt the food/water combo through the syringe.

Re: Lucian is not eating - Help Please!

OK, I mixed it half reg food and half tuna, the 8% 9 lives Tuna that he's eaten for yrs. I made it very thin in the blender.

My syringe is 6ml, I got about 5 in him, 1 ON him and stopped to give it a chance to settle. No problem with the mix, with the blender it is smooth as water.

After a couple minutes, I set the bowl down in front of him and he started drinking it! He has drank at least 2-3 oz of the water/food that I syringed into him and is washing his face!

I don't know what is going on with him, but he scared me to death! nailbite_smile

Thank you for your reply! :YMHUG:

Re: Lucian is not eating - Syringe fed

His glucose may have been so high he didn't feel well enough to eat.

Re: Lucian is not eating - Syringe fed

I dunno, his BG wasn't nearly as high as it has been.

I have no idea what caused this, but I'm watching to make sure it stays down and have the vet on speed dial. :o

Re: Lucian is not eating - Syringe fed

I'm glad he ate/lapped up some on his own.
I haven't syringed fed as of yet but I have noticed everyone says to use a food choice that isn't their favorite.
Apparently being force fed makes them not like that particular food anymore....

Sending appy vines to Lucian.

Re: Lucian is not eating - Syringe fed

I measured the bowl I had used for his syringe feeding and it held right at 5 oz.......he drank all but 1 tablespoon, I measured what was left. I feel better about him right now, we'll see how he does the rest of the day.

Thank you for asking. :YMHUG:

Re: Lucian is not eating - Syringe fed

Hopefully he was just feeling off this morning and didn't feel like eating - my cats do that sometimes.
Minkie (civie) sometimes only eats in the evenings (!)

Sending food vines....

Re: Lucian is not eating - Syringe fed

If it was my kitty, I would be taking him to the vet anyway. If your last labs are older than several months, it would be a good idea to get new ones, and probably both a chem panel as well as CBC and urinalysis.

They will also check for fever. If nothing more serious, Lucian could have an infection of some sort going on.

Just my two cents.

Re: Lucian is doing better, waiting...

Thanks everyone for their concern, I so appreciate it! :YMHUG:

I did take Lucian's temp, twice, with a digital thermometer, the kind with the thin plastic covers and NO I have no intention of ever using it again, he now has his OWN thermometer  His temp was 99.8 both times. I researched it and that is on the low side of normal, so no fever. :thumbup

I've been wracking my brain and the only thing I can think of, I gave him a few small bits of ham last night. He loves ham, I found out about a month ago, but he hadn't had any since then and only had 1 little piece then. Last night was the 2nd time he had ever had any. Maybe those few little pieces upset his tummy?

I am keeping a very close eye on him and if I feel it necessary to take him, before I can actually afford it, I will. That's what credit cards are for, emergencies. :-D But being unemployed, with no current income, I have to give it thought. I'm sure you understand. I do not feel he is at risk at the moment, should that change, I won't think twice.

Thanks for the link Larry!

Big hugz! :YMHUG:

Just to let everyone know, Lucian ate a couple teaspoons of food. YAY! I can exhale now! :o

He would have probably eaten more, but I didn't want to push it. Still hoping it was an upset tummy from the ham last night, but will be watching him closely. cat_pet_icon

Thanks to everyone for your concern! :YMHUG:

I'd keep an eye on him over the next couple of days just to be sure, but it sounds like he might have had a tummy ache, perhaps some acid reflux, or was just being a cat, so crossing fingers and paws that he's all fine now!

Lord I hope so! I don't know who was in worse shape this morning, me or him! He had me scared to death! Believe me, I'm in there every 10 mins checking on him. :-D

I did call the vet and they said if there was any problems to bring him, not to worry about an appt, but they didn't think there was anything to worry about, right now. With what I've spent, I'd expect at least that much consideration! :-x He was in the hospital for 8 days, 1st week of January, so all his labs, etc are current.

He's been purring and lovable whenever I go in and pet him, seems to be feeling better. :thumbup But I'll be keeping an eye on him.

No one has mentioned Pepcid AC.

If his stomach is upset, 1/4 of a Pepcid AC (10 mg /4 ie 2.5 mg), 30 minutes or so before the meal may help him eat.

Note this is the AC version (for acid control), not the Complete version.

I'm headed to the store for cat food and I plan to get some pepcid. I know a lot of other beans use it, so I thought it best to have some around. :-D

Thanks!

Lucian just ate his usual dinner. :-D So happy to see him acting normal and loving!

I came in from the store and he was ready to eat! Loud meows! cat_pet_icon
