low reading this morning..good i think!

eddie registered a 6.7 (121) this morning. last night he was at 17.9 (322). I gave him 1.00 unit last night...usually by the end of the 12 hours his level has gone up again...but apparently not this morning. i'm skipping his AM shot this morning, 6.7 is too low. i'm going to test again in a couple hours.

i've been changing his doses recently depending on the reading. he started at 2.00 (U-40), now i have him on 1.00. there were a few times he tested so low that i only gave him a 0.5.

i think his new diet is really paying dividends here. this levels are markedly higher the days he eats dry food, even the "diabetic" dry food. sometimes i'll free-feed him some dry during the day for when he gets hungry again...but it's always evident in his PM check.

i hope these are good signs. at what point can i start thinking that his pancreas may be producing good insulin? if his level goes down or stays level after no shot? it seems some days he's fine with only 1 shot.
 
Usually if you test after eating and the BG goes down, it is an indication that the pancreas is working. (It has produced insulin which is allowing the cells to metabolize the blood sugar, so the reading goes down). Have you considered free feeding with just wet food?

As Judy says, you can free feed with wet. It can sit out for several hours without a problem (unless you live in the tropics :mrgreen: ) or you can freeze it and let it thaw . Or use an automatic feeder. It is always a nice idea to feed several small meals during the day and night to support the pancreas, but especially a good idea when you start to get lower numbers.

i normally do leave out his wet food. he likes to eat, so usually finishes it all up in one or 2 sittings.

i'm feeding him half of his 5.5oz can twice a day. Is this enough? He does get a bit meow-y in the later afternoon when feeding time is about 2 hours away.
 
If he's hungry in the afternoon, feed him. Having tried scheduled feeding vs free feeding, I'm a complete advocate of free feeding. Unless your cat is obese and you're trying to slim him down, I don't see any reason not to. Of course, if we didn't free feed, we'd probably be gnawed to death...
 
Couple ideas.

If you are still feeding any dry, I would get rid of that and see what happens with the numbers. With the numbers you are getting, a complete switch may drive him down into normal levels.

If you are feeding only wet, how long as that been? You want to give it several days to a week, depending on the cat, to impact numbers to the extent it is going to.

If you are feeding only wet and have been for a week or more, you may want to look at tiny doses. You can do that with U100 syringes and the conversion chart: http://www.felinediabetes.com/insulin-conversions.htm If he needs insulin, it would be good to find tiny doses you can give consistently without skipping doses.
 
wow...eddie had no shot today, and his PM reading is only 9.4 (169). he had half a can of food this morning and i gave him a little more about an hour before his test.

he's eating now. i'll test him in a couple of hours, but i'm skipping his PM shot...

this is quite exciting! he seems to be responding well to the all-wet diet so far.
