What do people feed that need low protein as well as low carb??

I feed my crew LC varieties of Special Kitty... but my oldest boy Mateo ( otj_icon for 2 years tomorrow!!) is in very early stages of renal insufficiency. He needs to be switched to low protein food, but I DON'T want to sacrifice the carbs if I don't have to... would like him to stay otj_icon ! :)

I scanned teh Janet and Binky charts and the Special Kitty protein levels are in the mid to upper 30s... the rx food, K/D was I think 22, BUT had lots more carbs... hmmm...

Suggestions?

If he is in the early stages of renal insufficiency, you need to watch the phosphorus rather than the protein. The low protein food should only be used in the end stages. Use J&B's charts and look for something with less than 250 in the phosphorus column. Wellness turkey is one that I use.

all that would leave is fat and water

As Karen says, you don't have to really lower the protein much, its more the phosphorous you need to limit or use phosphorous binders

When Witn was alive, I feed her Friskies Special Diet canned foods. She had both CRF and diabetes. The only flavor I did not feed her was the Chicken & Gravy because of the carbs. That food help keep both her kidney levels and glucose levels stable. She was on that diet for almost 3 years before she passed away at 19. During that time her kidney values stayed at the same level the whole time.

I also use the friskies special diet, I only give them turkey and giblets variety. In addition, I use natures logic. And make homemade raw. You may want to check out raw options too.

My walmart only had one flavor of Friskies Special Diet, ocean whitefish. I was hoping for Turkey and my 2nd choice was Salmon. I got the ocean whitefish and will have to check around at other stores.... target, petco etc...

But how about KD ingredients???? Here's KD Chicken canned...

Water, Pork Liver, Chicken, Pork By-Products, Brewers Rice, Oat Fiber, Corn Starch, Glucose, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Potassium Citrate, Psyllium Seed Husk, Guar Gum, Calcium Carbonate, Fish Oil,

You don't need liver as your first source of protein, you don't need pork by-products, nor brewers rice, oat fiber, corn starch or glucose...

I can't remember where I read it but Dr Lisa wrote about pork and why it isn't great for cats but for the life of me I can't remember why....

Dawn,

Do you have access to Pet Supplies Plus? They have several flavors of Friskies Special Diet. I usually stay away from fish with male cats in particular.

The Pet Supplies Plus near me has been running specials on cases of Friskies all flavors. I bought 25 cases for just about $200 a couple of months ago. Last week it was on sale for 9.40 a case. Walmart is not always the best value.
