LOW PMPS. How can I keep my cat safe?

I am nervous about my cat's numbers because he was very high this morning, and then had a surprisingly low PMPS, the lowest I've ever seen.

Now, I am worried about giving him his PM shot. Is there anything I can do such as giving him part of the shot now, and the remainder later?

Ten days ago my cat had a hypo that was the most frightening thing I have ever experienced. He was high the previous day, and came down suddenly. His numbers didn't go all that low, however the swoop was big and I think it shocked him. I don't want to repeat this ever again. Is there anything safer that I can do tonight rather than sitting here all night testing every half hour and praying that going low isn't too rough on his body? He has been high for a while and is not used to what are probably in normal cases very good numbers.

He is low. Should I give a lower dosage?
Will that help keep him from having another hypo tonight?

I don't know what to do, and have not given the PM shot.
My apologies for asking several times. I am really quite frightened.

Numbers in the 170 - 180 range are not "low." Step back for a minute and look at the preshot numbers people have posted. I shot an 87 last night. Yes, River's numbers have been coming down all day. That's good. If you remember, I mentioned that the higher numbers may have been due to a bounce and you're seeing that bounce breaking. You retested at +13. River is surfing. I'd shoot.

As long as you have strips, a meter, and high carb food and can monitor, you will be able to keep River safe. Obviously, it's your call whether or not to shoot. You're the only one who can make that decision.

Completely understandable. Safety is always an important consideration. There are usually people here close to 24/7 so if you are unsure, post. We'll always help.

This is so great to know, Sienne, thank you, and all the caring people here.
I'd be happy to see blues all the time. This late one sneaked up on me. He's always been so high pre-shot, so my mind races to him going too low. I would welcome this sort of pre-shot number as part of our daily life. Maybe this will be a bit of a breakthrough of healing.

Nice to see a blue but any chance of spot check night time tests after PMPS +2? There's a lot of blanks in the night hours and many cats drop low then..

Yes, I'll be doing a 4, and from there see how he's going.
And thanks for the tip about buying strips from eBay. I ordered some today and got a good deal on them.

Lots of things about this sugardance are scary at first and even later but we will help you learn the skills you need to manage it.

Sienne and I are big fans of a +2 test for every cycle that you can get it. No matter how high he is. And anytime you shoot the lowest number you've shot before, a +1 and +2 will help you until you can pick out his patterns.

The reason we like the +2 test is that, in general, if it is much higher than the PS, it's likely to be a quiet cycle; if it is similar to or the same as the PS, you should expect an active, lantus cycle; if it is much less than the PS, you should be prepared for a very active cycle with a possible early drop. Lots of good info for you in the +2 test.

If you don't mind, could you please update your subject line in your original condo for today with the PMPS and any additional tests you get? We scan the list of kitties' numbers and if we see something out of the norm, we can pop into the condo. Or if we are working low numbers for several kitties at one time, it's a good way for us to quickly keep track of numbers.

Also....we encourage you to do one condo per day and put all your questions in that condo. If you have a question like you did tonight, just change the subject line. We have so many members that if we all did more than one condo, it would be impossible for us to keep track of everyone :-D :-D :-D
I know you are probably nervous about shooting tonight and so I don't mean to distract you. You are doing just fine!!!

Thanks for the encouragement, Marje and Grace! And I updated my subject line.

As for doing another posting, yesterday I tried putting my question in my posting for the day and I didn't get any answers, so I posted it as a second posting. I thought maybe that would be more convenient for people, rather than having them wade through a bunch of back-and-forth. Changing the subject line makes sense, and that's what I'll do.

I started doing the +2s about a week ago, on the 25th. I am finding with River that, at least for me, I don't know if he's going to go flat or drop until +4 or so. And then this big drop tonight at +12. He's unregulated, so I shouldn't be surprised about anything that happens, but I had been assuming that since he's almost always high pre-shot, that he was using all his insulin up before then. I am learning something new every day here.
