Update on Sunday 11/14: Thank you to everyone who replied to my post, sent lists of foods, observations and suggestions. This really helped me bring the picture of what's going on with Mabel into better focus so I can continue to address it. Next time we need vet attention and tests I'll try the other woman vet here to find out if she communicates more details that help me get a clearer picture from them. This one did respect my choices but my choices were based on guesswork. Mabel seems to be tolerating the antibiotic Zenaquin (12.5 mg daily 10 days) and I haven't seen blood in her urine the past 24 hours. I am putting out more water and she does drink it. I will be scrutinizing the wet foods I give them for phosphorus level and encouraging even more wet food consumption.

This is the original post:

Took Mabel to vet this morning. Dehydrated so they gave subcu fluid. ALT 114; BUN 34. Otherwise normal blood panel. She had blood in urine today. Treating with Zeniquin 25 mg. For renal support I declined to buy Hill's KD from vet. Nor do I want Royal Canine KD. I need recommendations for lo protein lo phosporus lo carb food. Mabel still in remission and I don't want to trigger her. Please help!

If you are looking for low carb foods with low phosphorus, look at the list posted immediately above this one and look for foods that have phosphorus levels of 250 to 200mg phosphorus / 100kcals.
You can also add cooked egg white to the food to make it lower phosphorus. The white of the egg is high protein and low phosphorus. I used to hard boil an egg and mash the white to add to Sheba’s food. I’d only start with a small amount to see if your kitty will tolerate it being added.

Chris and Checkers,
Thank you for the links! I hadn't seen Tanya's extensive list on standard foods. I'll look for foods there. Of course the catch is when protein goes lower carbs generally go higher. But there appear to be some moderate choices there.
Best, Emily K and Mabel

Food list under 10% carbs, under 1% phosphorus:

This list isn't necessarily low protein. Perhaps there is more info here: https://felinecrf.org/canned_food_usa.htm

The lists are helpful. I have to lower her protein though so I'd better avoid the egg whites for her. A good idea for my own diet though. Thanks for your post.

Why do you have to lower her protein?
Did the vet tell you to do that? It’s old thinking to lower the protein in cats with kidney issues, except in very advanced cases. The protein is needed to maintain muscle mass and general well being.

Hi. Unless it's end stage kidney disease you don't need low protien, you need low phosphorus. This is what I feed my diabetic ckd cat

Weruva slide and serve pate foods Family Food (.97 phosphorus and 0 carb).

Jeopurrdy Chicken (0.97 P 6.1 carb)

What a Crock 0.71 phosphorus and 8 carb lots of gravy so she loved it.

Goody stew shoes 0.71 phosphorus, 8.5 carb. This one was a big hit

Weruva Steak Frites (0.57 phosphorus 5.5 carb although I take out any big pieces of potatoes to try to limit the carbs just a bit)

Weruva LA isla Bonita - phosphorus 0.77 carb 4.5 (used to like, not a favorite anymore)

Glam and punk 1% carb, 0.93 phosphorous.

Weruva paw lickin chicken 3.3 carb 0.82 p

Bff play Laugh Out Loud chicken and lamb 7.7 carb, 0.82 phosphorous

BFF play destiny (chicken and duck) 0.87 phosphorus 7.7 carb

How does one know if it's end stage renal disease, I wonder. But I am relieved to know lowering protein does not have to be my main goal because it's hard so far to find a lo protein lo phosphorus lo carb food. That said, the vet we saw recommended Hill's or Royal Canin for renal support food, both dry or wet. And I opted to try to find another dietary solution because of the carbs in those foods. Thank you for the list you posted, very much!

I didn't know it's old thinking to lower protein unless a cat has advanced renal disease. The vet recommended prescription food for renal support. Because I hope not to trigger a relapse which requires insulin injections again I want to find alternatives to the Hill's or Royal Canine prescription foods. All these lists will help. Thank you for your posts. Emily K.

Vets are educated in food by the large food manufacturers and always seem to promote their products even when they are high carb and totally unsuitable for all cats. Cats don’t need carbs. They need meat.
Definitely don’t give the prescription foods or Mabel will drop out of remission.
Can you post your path results? Then I will ask Marj to have a look at them. She can tell you what stage Mabel is in. If it is only the BUN that is raised she is not that advanced.

Here's info on the staging. http://www.felinecrf.org/how_bad_is_it.htm
What was your cats creatnine level? If you have a copy of the lab report you could post it.

Thank you for affirming what I thought I knew about the prescription foods. I like the vet in my small town but realize I need to think out of the box. I was exhausted last night due to stress and didn't get to post. The ALT (114) and BUN (34) are the only higher than normal results. Phos (4.1) Cre (1.6) normal. Glu (148) a little high. At home before we left it was 100, but she was on high alert at the vet. She was dehydrated and I approved subcu fluid. She drinks a lot and pees a lot. I have found blood with occasional mucus where she has urinated during the past week. I'm giving her Zeniquin 12.5 mg daily for 10 days. She's on her second day. I give it in a pill pocket with her other food. Any impressions from Marj would be most appreciated!

I will tag
@JanetNJ
I see she asked you above what the creatinine level was
Thanks Janet

Thank you for your message. She was also dehydrated, even though she drinks and pees a lot. And, after two days of the antibiotic, I haven't seen more blood on her urine either. Today I'll give her the third dose (12.5 mg) of Zenaquin. If I can keep her hydrated and the suspected urinary system infection clears up she should have pretty good quality of life again. I did put out an additional water bowl yesterday (now there are several places for water) and she used it. She drinks and pees a lot. It's probably what has kept her going all this time. The dry food is NA (Farmina) Digestion and it is .8 phosphorus. The search for higher quality wet food goes on and all the suggestions shared with me here are a big help. Thank you so much to you all.
With a creatinine of 1.6 she definitely doesn’t need prescription food yet. (My cat has similar valued 1.8 as of June) That is super early kidney issues. Just find lower phosphorus food and maybe put some extra water bowls around where your cat hangs out.

The bun wasn’t really excessively high. Flushing out the infection with sub q was a good idea but she didn’t look particularly dehydrated. Both ckd and diabetes causes excessive peeing, so not a surprise she’s doing that. I hope the uti clears quickly. It’s common for sugar cats to get a uti because of the glucose in the urine.
