HI !

I have to thank this wonderful site and people! Its been so helpful in managing and hopefully getting my kitty ( Nino ) into remission.

I am going on about the 4 month since him being diagnosed. I am doing Lantus relaxed. He free feeds canned FF classic, supplemented with fresh cooked chicken.

his numbers went really low for awhile so I weened him off the Lantus. He was doing really well, then started drinking tons of water again and loosing weight, but his numbers were still hovering around 200.

So back on lantus. His numbers are now low again. This morning he was at 47 this was about an hour before AMS. He seems fine and quite playful. Do I give him a shot? or skip this morning?

Also he has been throwing up a bit of bile in the mornings about 2 hours before the normal shoot and before feeding. This seemed to start when I started the lantus.. he didnt do this before.

Thank you~!!

Thank you!

Skip the dose please, to be safe. You may need to do some management for low numbers, feeding some food. Do you have low carb, medium carb, high carb food on hand? A 47 is hypo territory and you want to get those numbers up if he has insulin this morning of is still going low from yesterday's shot.

What is the BG reading right now?

Could you tell us where you live? What country, state/province/territory/? This is so we have an understanding of when your 'morning' is.

HI ..

I live in Los angeles california. He is on a low carb diet. I have different foods available and he will eat yogurt with honey in a pinch. I usually shoot at 11 am and 11 pm.

it is 11:30 in california now. He had a 47 at 9:30 am, 2 hours ago. He then ate medium carb canned food and some greenies. I am going to test him now and will be right back.

Thank you!

I agree, you should not shoot this morning.

Would you be willing to put your country and state into your user control panel, profile, edit signature like you did for the spreadsheet?

Congratulations by the way on having the spreadsheet set up for us to look at.

The dosing may be too high. I've asked someone else to come and look and give advice.

I don't feel comfortable giving dosage advice - but I did want to say that the vomiting you describe sounds like it might be bilious vomiting syndrome...and my understanding is any sort of underlying illness that stresses a cat can also increase their BG levels - so I just wanted to toss that out for consideration

"Bilious vomiting syndrome occurs due to motility problems, when bile abnormally enters into the stomach, causing irritation and vomiting. That is, when the gastrointestinal tract fails to react automatically to the normal functions that occur within the tract, contents in the tract do not move as they should, causing abnormal behaviors within the system. Bile that has entered into the stomach is expelled by the cat, and the vomit contents are found to contain bile.
This reaction is usually seen in the early morning or late night just before eating, especially in cats that are fed once daily. It is a rare condition in cats; when it does occur it is usually in older cats. Both genders are equally affected."

Thank you for this info!

yes I updated my profile to include my location. He is older. Not sure the exact age as he is a rescue... but somewhere around 10-14. Other then vomiting he is doing great. Looks and acts fairly young. He was very sick when he first got Diagnosed. But he has responded so well to Lantus and getting rid of dry food and keeping to a low carb diet.

I will keep checking him today and wait til tonight. Perhaps bring his does down to 1.25. with the goal of getting him to 1 U in a few days. Ive been bringing him down slowly fro 2 U.

Thanx for all the help guys. I really would like to get him into remission!

another thing I thought of... is maybe the vomiting is due to him used to having a bowl of dry food out always. he is a grazer.. so perhaps its because of an empty stomach in the morning?

Actually looking at his spreadsheet I would go the reverse this evening I would start him back on insulin at a much lower dose. As a rule 2u is a very high starting dose for a cat already eating a low carb diet.

So I would let him just ride today and if and only if he is over 200 tonight would I start him back on Lantus and then at .5u which is normally where we start a newly dxed diabetic (yeah I know he isn't newly dxed but he is just starting back on insulin again). Give that .5u a chance to settle since his numbers weren't terribly high to begin with when you started him back on insulin. So give that .5u about 5 days to settle then when you have your next free day run a curve and we can see from that if you need to go up or not from there.

Vomiting can also be from him going to low or going down too fast. As well as a several other causes but if it only happens when he is on insulin I would suspect the insulin is dropping to far or too fast and making him sick to his stomach.

Thank you Mamaomuse!

good advise... I had actually started him back up slowly earlier this month. But I will keep his dosing really low and watch his BC like a hawk. Even when he was off the Lantus his numbers were still low. It was the water drinking and large amounts of sticky urine that got me worried. My Vet is in the Loop with all this and has looked at his spread sheet. But this is all new to her too.

She was very excited to hear about this forum and is learning from it as well.

Thank you for this wonderful help!
