low level anti-inflammatory/pain management

Hello my civi cat Artemis is 16 years old very petite barely weighing in at 5 1/2 lbs , I am looking for something that could help her joint pain. Mostly in her hips and hind legs, she still jumps around but not with the frequency or easy as when she was younger. I am reluctant to start heavy duty meds..as I would rather save them for when she really needs it or am I just being stupid?? I have her on Cosequin for cats <sprinkle capsules> 1/2 with snacks 2 a week and have been giving it to her now for almost 4 months. At this point there does not seem to be as much improvement for her and I wonder if there is an inbetween step before the heavy guns et brought out??

Neko is on Duralactin for her arthritis. It's an anti-inflammatory. You can also try fish oil/Omega-3 added to her diet. Neko also gets acupuncture for pain management. It's always best to get ahead of pain. Good luck.
 
Thank you for responding to my post Billy's mom, Shane and Wendy, I will look in to your suggestions.. she is my lil girl and it is just so sad when she gives me that look. "it hurts mommie make it stop"
 
What does the vet say? Have any x-rays been done to confirm or rule out arthritis?
 
The vet says she has low arthritis, there is no malformation of the joints which is good news. The bad news is he mad no recommendations on pain management and when he was asked he commented that the meds could harm her kidney function. I could not get details on how much damage verses her quality of life not quite sure what to do now.
 
Is her kidney function limited or borderline high right now? If not, I'd probably ask for a low dose of one of the meds the others have recommended here. I agree with you that her quality of life is important and if her kidneys are currently compromised, then hopefully a low dose of meds will help her arthritis without hurting her kidneys. Others may not agree but those are my thoughts.
 
No her kidneys are not compromised other than her pain her health is very good, I just don't get it.
 
If he were prescribing an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug), there could be adverse consequences to the kidneys over time. This doesn't prevent him from prescribing a small, daily, dose of buprenorphine. Nor does it prevent him from getting Adequan.
And definitely try a small amount of fish oil daily.

Mogs looking into the loop sounds interesting.. kinda like tens for animals but not quite either, have you tried it yet?
 
OUCH that is way beyond my budget even if I ate nothing but rice or spuds all month! Talked to the vet assistant and I have an appointment to take Artemis back in the 5th of sept. The long time out mostly due to the fact that James doesn't get payed again until the 3rd. At this point we will be bringing in both of the children Artemis for pain and Magellan because the vet wants to check up on him and his sugars.
 
@BJM - good spot on the cheaper alternative. I think the price Assisi charge is extortionate.

@Julia Rae - I did purchase an Assisi Loop for Saoirse but have yet to do a proper trial of it for her pancreatitis. Just after it arrived a specialist put her on too high a dose of pain meds and it triggered a pancreatitis flare so I didn't pursue the treatment at that time because I didn't want to do anything to 'rock the boat' until Saoirse stabilized again. Since then my own health got worse and consequently that put me off trying anything different with Saoirse. I do hope to give it a go again in the future. For the few sessions Saoirse had with the loop she seemed to be OK with it. Assisi don't document it on their site, but I've read elsewhere on the intertube that one should start conservatively with the treatment and gradually build up the time the PEMF device is used each day.

I was once treated with magnetic therapy myself for tendon inflammation in my wrist and thumb. It worked well for me, and quickly.
