Low Carb Kibble Options in Canada?

Hi all

So today we have to move out of our apartment. Grayson's going to be in limbo for a little while and back with my mom with me monitoring him. My mom is interested in learning about some low carb kibble options for her little female cat (she won't eat wet food), which will also be safe for Grayson in case he decides to snack throughout the day. He will still be getting his Fancy Feast, he loves it, but in case he comes across the other food bowl I want to make sure that it is safe. It will also be healthier for the other cat in the long run, she is only 2 years old.

Unfortunately, I don't think you can get anything low carb in Canada...the only 2 dry kibbles that are low carb are Young Again Zero Carb and Evo Cat & Kitten, and everyone I hear from on the message board that lives in Canada says they can't get it

I sure hope your mom has really turned over a new leaf and won't let Grayson get back into the dry! You've made such great progress lately!!
 
She is being just as difficult right now. She's refusing to have him fed in a separate room and refuses to stop feeding dry food. Her cat won't eat wet food - she bought this Hills Science Diet stuff. She still doesn't think that his severe weight loss was due to diabetes and blames age. She absolutely will not admit that she has ever been wrong and the need to find a new apartment is pretty critical right now...

I really wish I lived closer to you! I'd take Grayson in a split second and make sure he was kept safe while you were going through the pain of finding a new place to live
 
Looks like the Legacy Adult Formula is about 32% dry matter carb

The Legacy Adult Fish is about 30%

Legacy Cat and Kitten is about 22%

I gave you the link to legacy which the cat and kitten formula winds up around 22% dry
look up the guaranteed analysisis, they don't list carbs so add up everything else and subtract from 100 % or use the calculator that I provided the link to. You'll get the drift opretty quick. The grain frees will be your best bet.

besides legacy, petcurean held some promise. You may be able to find stock of low carb still on shelves

I wonder if your mom would be willing to try something like dehydrated raw, like Stella & Chewys? It's usually meant to be re-hydrated before feeding, but we've suggested it to others who have kibble addicts that also need low carb

Comes in a bag and you just pour it into a bowl...just like dry kibble

I think it's become my new mission in life to create a dry food that's < 10% carbohydrate. I will send her an updated list of foods, I'm grateful she's at least trying new foods and hopefully it will be better for her little one in the long run, and safe for Grayson if his palate decides to stray. I've noticed that her cat has gained quite a bit of weight since I took Grayson away, she was lowest on the totem pole.

Also, I looked up T2 Nutram Total Grain Free Turkey, Chicken, and Duck and I'm getting 17.55% dry carb. Seems alright?

I have a kibble addict who refuses to eat wet food too so I share this struggle.

I calculate the Nutram is actually about 23% carb (rough calculation based on guaranteed ingredients.) Did you get the 17.5% from Nutram based on as fed?

Here are lowest carb options I've found in Canadian made kibble are (note these carb counts are approximate):

Orijen - 17% (available at Global)
Go Fit and Free - 14% (available at Pet Valu)
Legacy - 20 (mentioned by Bonz above - almost 500 calories per cup so must watch intake if trying to lose or maintain weight) - 20% (you'll have to check around....I had to get it ordered in)

U.S. Brands currently available here are below. Keep in mind that the pet import regulations are changing in Canada this month so there is a possibility that these US brands may not be available in the future. I'm hoping this is not the case but if you are going to be needing the kibble long term, I think finding something as suitable as possible that's Canadian made will avoid any potential headaches going forward.

Nature Variety Instinct - 17% (Contains tapioca so not the best selection)
Wellness Core Grain Free - 16%
Taste of The Wild Rocky Mountain - 22%

I'm still investigating our possibilities but this is what I have found so far. Hope it helps.
 
She went and bought Wholesome Blend Grain Free (Turkey & Duck) - apparently I'm not understanding the calculations correctly, can I get a percentage on it?

EDIT: Nevermind, website says 25.4%
 
Ryn, the numbers I gave you in my previous thread are just rough estimates based on using the Guaranteed Analysis. . Looking at the Wholesome Blend and using my rough calculations of subtracting the total of the Protein, Fat, Fibre, Moisture, & Ash content from 100, it comes to 23%. The 25.4% is obviously more accurate and to be honest I find it refreshing and encouraging that Nutreco has seen fit to provide that information. Good on them!

She returned the Wholesome Blend and came back with Go FIT + FREE Chicken, Turkey, and Duck. It is 15% As Fed carbohydrates on their website. He's already taken off to the feeder and wants it... so I'm anticipating some vomiting in the near future. Unfortunately there's nothing I can do about it at the moment, he's still getting his Fancy Feast from me and testing when I can... but I am driving 80-90 km per day right now just so I can come back and give him his shots and I'm exhausted already after the second day :(

Wow...yeah that much driving would be a full time job as it is!!

Tell your mom that we're proud of her....at least she seems to be trying to reach a compromise and that's a BIG change in her attitude from where she was!!
 
Great food choice Ryn (given what is available to us) and even better that Grayson likes it. :cat: You have really gone above and beyond for Grayson and continue to do so. Driving all those kms/day...WOW! Grayson is one lucky kitty to have such a devoted Mom and my hat's off to you for how you are managing his care!:bighug: I'm so glad your Mom is starting to co-operate to help you look after Grayson in the best way possible.
