So vet is pushing Hills M/D wetfood and is not familiar with fancy feast low carb pate. She states sometimes sugar is used in canned foods during the process of making it which will make Kenzo's diabetes worse. Has anyone heard of this?

I honestly have not heard of that, but my own experience is that all vets I have talked to typically will push the prescription food angle. I chose to research food on my own and we have regulated Moby well on that research. He is also a "pate' guy" and enjoyed the Fancy Feast turkey n' giblets, Wellness Core, and Halo's grain free Spot's Stew. We also gave the Young Again Zero Carb a try for mid-day snacks and he really enjoyed that.

It's a hard decision to make, I know! I had to find a balance on who's expertise I would take and who's I would discard, and I wish there was an easy answer, but that's something only we can do for ourselves and our kitties.

Lol. Carbs ARE sugar, she should know that. M/D has 14% carbs (sugar) vs Fancy Feast pates which contain around 4 or 5%. If anything is making diabetes worse, its the food with the most carbs. Most vets get little to no nutritional training. Nothing against vets, but they're general practitioners. It would be like me expecting my general practitioner to know which diet plan I should follow for my diabetes (I don't have diabetes--this is an example). People have dieticians that they go to for guidance. Animals don't typically have that. The vets push the Hills because they're paid to push Hills. Most of them don't know much about the nutritional values of cat food, and I wouldn't expect them to which is why I bring it to my vets attention. Just tell the vet that there's no way you can afford Hills, and then share with her the nutritional values of what you are feeding.

Interestingly enough, Squeaker's IM told me to seek out low carb foods after he was diagnosed. Vet's have been pushing Rx food since it hit the market because there is a high profit margin for them.

just go to dr. lisa's food list, mush has had diabetes & was being fed low carb food under 10% & is currently in remission. Fancy feast classic & chunky is ok!
Good luck & use this site often as even my vet gave me no directions as far as food was concerned. The vets make money off the prescription diet foods.
